Choose an answer

(^1) solar system 2 umbra

(^3) planet 4 Rotation

Don't know?

star A ball of hot gas, primarily hydrogen and helium, that undergoes nuclear fusion.

planet A large body in space that orbits a star and does not produce light of its own

moon a natural object that orbits a planet

Tides the daily rise and fall of Earth's waters on its coastlines

Rotation The spinning of Earth on its axis

Revolution The movement of an object around another object

Axis An imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the North and South poles, about which Earth rotates

orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space

crescent Moon phase in which less than half of the Moon appears to be illuminated.

Gibbous Moon phase in which more than half of the Moon appears to be illuminated.

Patterns recurring characteristics or events

Gravity A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.

Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion

Ellipse A regular oval shape, traced by a point moving in a plane so that the sum of its distances from two other points is constant, or resulting when a cone is cut by an oblique plane which does not intersect the base.

satellite An object that revolves around another object in space

galaxy A huge group of single stars, star systems, star clusters, dust, and gas bound together by gravity

universe All of space and everything in it

constellation A group of stars that form a pattern in the sky

electromagnetic radiation a form of energy that exhibits wavelike behavior as it travels through space

spectrum A broad range of nevertheless related qualities or ideas, esp. those that overlap to create a continuous series (as in a color spectrum, where each color blends into the next in a continuous way)

Wavelength Horizontal distance between the crests or between the troughs of two adjacent waves

telescope A device built to observe distant objects by making them appear closer

orbiter a space vehicle designed to orbit a planetary body or moon; also the space shuttle orbiter

Lander a craft designed to land on a planet's surface

Fusion Creation of energy by joining the nuclei of two hydrogen atoms to form helium.

Convection The transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid

corona The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere.

Sunspot A dark area of gas on the sun's surface that is cooler than surrounding gases.

solar wind A stream of electrically charged particles produced by the sun's corona

Nebula A large cloud of dust and gas in space

black hole An object in space whose gravity is so strong not even light can escape.

nova a star that increases thousands of times in brightness and then fades
