Traditional Ecological Knowledge Subject: Environment, Institution: University of California Traditional Ecological knowledge refers to knowledge gained by local people about their surroundings and their relationship with environment over thousands and thousands of years. This accumulated knowledge came from experiences and practices of their ancestors. The experiences and practices of local tribes should not be dismissed because they came from practically living with environment unlike our modern life in concrete jungles. It has been found by many researchers that most local tribes used to live in complete harmony with the nature. Perhaps local tribes had foresight about sustainable living which we have given importance now after severe ecological imbalance due to climate change. Many of local communities and tribes which still survive in rural areas have lived close to nature for thousands of years. They had realized the importance of nature and their practices including nature worship looked rudimentary superstitious to us. Studying the current lives of ancient tribes in India many researchers were amazed by their knowledge of their ecology and found their seemingly backward living style to be in complete harmony with the nature. Studying tribes in Amazon forests, Sub-Saharan deserts of Africa or in India, researchers found a common theme of their admiration of trees and greenery. They do not have any knowledge about percentage increase in world average temperature, but they seem to have learned that their lives depend on forests. They seem to have practiced a culture of gratitude and their understanding of holy and profane is not just superstition, but they do show gratitude to nature which sustain us and them.
Modern agricultural methods including using chemicals not just harms the health of those who consume foods grown through such methods but also harms the agricultural fields. In short term it may seem that chemicals have helped in increasing agricultural output but over long run it converts farmlands into barren lands. Thousands of acres of farmlands have become barren in India due to use of chemical pesticides. In contrast local tribes use alternative methods including burying their previous produce waste to increase the agricultural friendliness of the soil. The methods used by local tribes are sustainable compared to modern methods designed and developed out of mere greed to increase short term output. The superiority of Traditional Ecological knowledge of local communities is also visible in fisheries where local tribes have better knowledge of cleaning methods and types of fishes to be cultured together. They use alternative herbal ingredients to keep their pounds clean without harming the ecological balance by using chemicals. The chemicals used in modern fisheries not only clean the pounds of fungus but also harms the fishes by causing diseases in them. Some of the traditional ecological knowledge of tribes have still not been understood by us. They seem to have even some advanced methods which we still cannot understand. In the famous tsunami of Indian Ocean in 2005 it was found that local tribes went for safety on mountains even though the scientists were late in issuing alert. Almost everyone except the tribal population died on islands near ocean due to such advanced knowledge of ecology preserved by them. It is time that we learn ecological balanced living from local tribes and communities so that we also live in perfect harmony with nature. The sustainability of modern human population is in danger because we are not living in harmony with our surrounding. Perhaps we have to fall
