  1. Hysteresis losses due to nonlinear application of the voltage applied in the transformer core, and
  2. Eddy current losses due to joule heating in the core that are proportional to the square of the transformer's applied voltage.

1.2 Main Types

Mainly transformers are of two types based on their ability to increase or decrease the voltage.

1.2.1 Step-up Transformer

On a step-up transformer there are more turns on the secondary coil than the primary coil. The induced voltage across the secondary coil is greater than the applied voltage across the primary coil or in other words the voltage has been “stepped-up”.

1.2.2 Step-down Transformer

A step down transformer has less turns on the secondary coil that the primary coil. The induced voltage across the secondary coil is less the applied voltage across the primary coil or in other words the voltage is “stepped-down”. [6]

1.3.1 Turn Ratio

Ratio of the number of turns in the secondary winding to the number of turns in the primary winding of a transformer. [8]
