Uncertainty in Measurement:
Measurements consist of 2 parts:
A number
And a unit
What does it tell us? It tells us something about the quality of the
measurement
Error: the difference between a measured value and the ‘true value’
Uncertainty: quantifiable doubt about the measurement
Quantifying uncertainty
Average (arithmetic mean): As a rule of thumb, a measurement should be
measured between 4-10 times [heighth]
Spread (standard deviation): a measure of how far each of your individual
(4-10) datapoints is removed from the average [spread]

Uncertainty in Measurement:

❖ Measurements consist of 2 parts: ➢ A number ➢ And a unit ❖ What does it tell us? It tells us something about the quality of the measurement ❖ Error: the difference between a measured value and the ‘true value’ ❖ Uncertainty: quantifiable doubt about the measurement

Quantifying uncertainty ● Average (arithmetic mean): As a rule of thumb, a measurement should be measured between 4-10 times [heighth] ● Spread (standard deviation): a measure of how far each of your individual (4-10) datapoints is removed from the average [spread]
