Understanding the process of science
For this assignment, you will read a short scientific research article. Science research is
published in peer-reviewed research journals (meaning, several professional scientists
with expertise in the particular area of science critically read the submitted research
manuscript before it is approved for publication. Many research articles are sent back
to the researchers for further work, and must be resubmitted; some research articles
are rejected for publication). The article you will be reading is published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a very prestigious science research
journal, which is published every week.
During the next class period, you will be asked to respond to questions related to the
process of science. Points of focus:
1. What is the hypothesis of the authors of this article?
2. What observations (patterns) that they/others made resulted in the authors'
hypothesis?
3. Why was detail given to the light placement in the experimental design?
4. What conclusions can be drawn from the data depicted in Figure 1?
