  • Data terminal equipments : Are devices used to process, host and transmit data on a network. Examples: computer mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAS) - Transmit ion media Are physical or wireless pathways used to transmit data and information from one point to another. - Internet service provider s (ISP’S) These are companies that offer internet service to end users
  • Software :-To access internet services, a computer must be installed with an internet protocol, a browser and e-mail client - Internet protocol Is a set of rules that governs how two computers can send and receive data on a network. For the internet protocol used is the Transmission control protocol and Internet protocol (TCP/IP) o TCP - Governs how data is transferred from one place to the next while o IP – Determines the addressing system on the internet example: Each network and computer on the internet is recognized by a special number called the IPADDRESS that enables data to be sent and received by it WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)
  • WWW can be viewed as a vast virtual space on the internet where information is made available.
  • Wide storage of files on the internet

WEBSITE

A Website is the group of related WebPages or other resources located on a web server. The first page on the website is called a homepage BLOG Is a website that contains personal information which can easily be updated. Some blogs act like resume, diary and may be used for business, etc MULTIMEDIA SITES Multimedia sites are the sites that contain photos, movies, music, web TV and internet radio. They are meant for entertainment. ELECTRONIC MAILING Simply is referred to as e-mail is a mail transmitted electronically over the internet INSTANT MESSAGING Is a more enhancing service that allows two or more people to communicate directly. To get messages you must first register with an instant messenger such as Yahoo messenger E-COMMERCE (ELECTRONIC COMMERCE) It is a business strategy where goods and services are sold over the internet. SEARCH ENGINES Are specialized programs that help a user easily search for information on the internet. Examples are Google, Alta vista, Excite and Yahoo The following are good search tips:

  • Identify a search engine
  • Enter the keywords in the search text box
  • Use quotations marks to identify the key words
  • From the displayed search result, identify the site that contain the information you want UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR (URL) The uniform resource locator (URL), simply referred to as the web address, connects the user to a particular website. The URL has two basic parts: a) Protocol- standard used to connect to the resource example: (http://) and file transfer protocol (ftp://) b) Domain name- name of the web server where the resource is located THE STRUCTURE OF THE DOMAIN NAME A domain name always has two or more parts separated by dots For example, the domain name for  IBM is "ibm.com  The United Nations is "un.org.” The three-letter domain name suffix is known as a generic top-level domain It describes the type of organization  com or co - business (commercial)  .edu or ac - educational organization  .org or or - non-profit organization  .mil - military  .net - network provider  .gov or go - government agency . au - Australia

USING E-MAIL

To create, receive and send electronic mails, a special e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Yahoo mail, Gmail and Eudora are Required YAHOO MAIL To open Yahoo mail,  you first Sign up for an email account  Sign in using your yahoo ID and a password  Click check mail button then Inbox  In the inbox click the subject of mail to read  Read the mail, open an attachment if any EMAIL ADDRESS FORMAT A typical email address looks like this [email protected]Prisca is a user name and is usually coined by the user during email account registration  @ is a symbol for “at” which separates the username from the rest of the address  Yahoo.com is the name of the host computer in the network i.e the computer on which the email account is hosted  The period ”. ” Is read as dot is used to separate different parts of the email address  Com identifies the type of organization offering a particular service

  2. Then change the background color to be Red
