Summary: ‘Small Town USA’ In the article ‘Small Town, U.S.A.: Growing and Groaning’ journalist Frank Trippett refers to the population growth in small towns. Americans desire to be part of a smaller community. It promises a more cosy and social living. This ideal was first introduced by Norman Rockwell as he described small town to be serene, friendly and neighbourly. Thus presenting ‘the perfect living’ for American residents. The reality proves to be quite different from the absolute dream. Author Richard Lingeman, who had examined the most diverse towns, explains that the purpose of the migration could be a simple escape from large cities. Crowded streets, dirt, violence and wild ambience certainly don’t sound ap- pealing. But these problems could occur in small towns as well, claims Frederic Cooper, program manager of the Mississippi Institute for Small Towns. The compact budget of a small town could often lead to shortage of resources. The absence of self-contained and self-sufficient small towns is a possible cause. While many towns are trying to survive, they also have to provide for the increased population and new industry. Colorado’s Governor Richard D. Lamm also complains that these problems could promote crime. It is simply difficult for small towns to stay small according to Mayor Byron Far- well of Hillsboro. Nevertheless, little towns have always had a special place in America’s heart and soul. The author mentions that the intimate and neighbourly affection can still be found. In spite of the negative comments, many Americans are still chasing their long-sought-after dream.
