Slide 1: Defining WASPS - correct answer Before we get into learning about WASP's and their purpose it is important to understand the definition behind what they are called. WASP means White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Looking into this extensive name each word ties in what these people are. White clearly addresses their skin color. Anglo is actually a prefix used to indiciate the relationship to being an English descendant in another country. Saxon is an adjective to help support the word Anglo. Lastly, Protestant is a religion seperate from Roman Catholic Church meaning a vast majority is Baptist or Presbyterian. So, as you can see, just by defining these four simple words you can already start to get an idea of exactly who these people are. Slide 2: What Are WASPS - correct answer The term "WASP" is defined as White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. It is a closed social group of a high status. These people are known to have "old money" and a strong sense of religion. Also, known to be very influential throughout their society. Slide 3: Where WASP's Came From - correct answer The White Anglo-Saxon Protestant came from a variety of places all over New England. They came from Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. Slide 4: Why Did They Leave? - correct answer The 1st WASP to land on America was actually Christopher Columbus. As we all know, Columbus meant to find a new trade route to India and ended up landing right on the soil of the US. The exact date was October 12th, 1492. After this, the WASP's chose to come America, they were not forced. Slide 5: Why WASPS Chose America - correct answer The White Anglo-Saxon Protestant chose America for many reasons. One major one being religion. They wanted to have freedom of religion, since many kings forced Catholism upon WASPs when actually the majority of WASPs were Christian. Also, WASPs wanted to spread their religion to the Native Americans in America. Another big factor was land. Many son's inherited land from America and went to claim it, while other WASPs came over to buy as much land as they wanted. Another big reason is for more wealth. Since there was a vast land for searching for gold and business across this "new world".
Slide 6: Where Did They Land? - correct answer The WASPs settled along the Eastside of the US. Many up North around Maine, New York, Massachusstes, and Rhode Island. However, many went down in the South like South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. Although they started on the Eastside they eventually spread out across the nation, from Florida to Maine to California to Texas. WASP continued to grow across America. Slide 7 - correct answer Now that we understand the meaning of WASP here is a look on what happened over the years and what all the WASPs contributed overtime. Slide 8: The Foods They Ate & Brought - correct answer A big contribution the WASPs brought was food. As they brought over many animals including cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chicken, and more! Also they brought over rye and wheat, but they found native in America bananas and sugarcane. Also WASPs were big drinkers of beer. In fact, they even the children. Lastly the richest of the WASPs drank wine. Slide 9: View on Medicine - correct answer WASPs felt a strong need to keep their bodies pure and use a lot of self care. Also, if somebody were to get sick, it was seen as a permanent element that God used to "purify" those who are sinful. Slide 10: Politics - correct answer The WASPs were highly involved in poltics. Often blamed as being in control of politics and the economy, due to their wealth. They were mostly all Republicans and known to be on the conservative side of politics, yet held liberal views on racial integration. Some famous WASPs are George Washington, George W. Bush, Rockefeller, and John F. Kennedy. WASP on Religion - correct answer The WASPs religion varies around Christianity. It goes to Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Congregational, Baptist, and Methodist. But they are in no apart of Roman Catholism. WASPs are strong in their religion and want to spread it as much as possible. Slide 12: WASP Stereotypes - correct answer Some big stereotypes of WASPs is that they are considered to be "old money", meaning their richness runs in the family. Another is that WASP are privlidged white people who have a strong political and economical power, allowing them to control certain things other people cannot. Also they are known as the "Wealthy Republicans" and their future generations are seen to be as lazy, self-cenetered, and self entilted people.
