Week 05 Essay Assignment Walden University NURS 3100 Section 29, Issues and Trends How to avoid plagiarism and how paraphrasing and synthesizing professional literature strengthens future nurse scholar-practitioner practice. Plagiarism, as defined in the Walden University student handbook, is the "use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source" (Walden University, 2020, Student Expectations and Responsibilities Section, P. 35). Plagiarism is a form of cheating in the academic setting. It is of utmost importance that nursing students refrain from plagiarism as it transcends into their careers as a form of dishonesty. Academic writing requires professional integrity, ethics, and honesty, and therefore, plagiarism must not be in a nursing student's mindset. Lynch, Everett, Ramjan, Callins, Glew, and Salamonson 2017) stated that "cheating within the academic setting has been associated with dishonesty in the clinical setting, which highlights the importance of nurturing a culture of honesty and integrity at university" (P. 2846). To avoid plagiarism, firstly, I will use the university student handbook and writing center as a guideline for my writing. The writing center at Walden University provides a vast number of tutorials to assist students in improving reading and writing skills. I will continue to use this
resource throughout my time at Walden: using APA style for proper citing and referencing, paraphrasing, quoting, paragraph construction, and many more. Additionally, to avoid plagiarism, I intend to use the time management tracking table provided to us in the previous weeks to use my time efficiently. It is difficult to think critically, a vital skill in writing and research. One must manage study time appropriately. A useful skill I have learned from the writing center is that when reading through research, it is imperative to take notes of important ideas. Paraphrasing in academic writing involves using other authors' work and ideas to formulate one's analysis of a topic. Paraphrasing shows that one understands and values the opinions and works of other writers (s), in the end, contributing to scholarly works in that field. During their careers and perhaps in life itself, nurses will need professional ethics and integrity to provide care to patients. These values, if not already innate, need to be developed and nurtured during their education for a better nursing future profession. Important questions in healthcare can be answered through strong research by ethically sound nurses that are vital to the research process because of the integrity they possess (Lach, Loman & Oerther. 2018). Paraphrasing is only a piece in the beginning of building a strong base for better nursing practice. Synthesis, on the other hand, requires critical reading and thinking in order to compare different materials, highlighting similarities, differences, and connections, according to Walden University (2020). Synthesizing provides the writer with a sense of integrity in the eyes of the reader when the scholarly work is completed the right way. This skill, like many others, must be developed, and with time and practice, perfected. The time and critical thinking invested in this process, when completed in the right manner, teach a nursing student essential values they can use in their profession. An article in the orthopedic Nursing publication (2002), stated that
