Suggested Questions to guide weekly writing are presented below. Each week, prepare a short (one
paragraph to five page) essay for discussion and evaluation. The type of required writing is
presented below as the topic for the week (week one is expressive, etc.), but other questions are
also included, with type of recommended writing indicated.
Week 1: Expressive Writing.
- Expressive: Who am I? What am I doing here?
- Required: What am I really interested in?
Week 2: Descriptive Writing
- Expressive: What is my immediate reaction to my topic?
How do I feel about Marx? Am I impressed, confused, excited?
- Required (pick one): What is Marxist theory? What do I know about the topic I have
chosen?
Week 3: Exploratory Writing, part I
- Expressive: What do I think of Marx? My topic?
Marxist approaches to my topic?
- Descriptive: What is Marxist theory? What have I learned about my topic? What is my
question?
- Required: How might Karl Marx approach my question?
Week 4: Exploratory Writing, part II
- Expressive: How do I feel about my project and the theories? What's bugging me?
- Descriptive: What is Marxist theory? What have I learned about my topic?

- Required: What do I think about my Marxist analysis? Is it compelling? Should I
reconceptualize the question?
Week 5: Analytical Writing
- Expressive: What scares/excites me about this project? Am I really ready to turn in my
portfolio next week?
- Descriptive: What is Marxist theory?
-Required: What is my basic argument? Have I answered my question? Do I have a
thesis? How does my approach compare to Marx?
Week 6: Analytical Writing
- Expressive: How do I feel about turning in my portfolio
- Descriptive: What are the contents of my portfolio? How did I produce it?
- Exploratory: How do Marx and I differ in our approaches to my topic?
- Required: My analysis of my topic, which includes my informed opinion, after having
explored Marx, as he might approach my question.
