Family Analysis Media Review
! Set in a small dead-end town in the early 1990s, Gilbert Grape, a young man forced to grow up to fast, faces the challenges of being the caregiver for his family. This is not your typical American family which makes Gilbert’s job at home difficult and frustrating. His family consists of his Mama, an obese widow who is unable to move off the living room couch. There is Arnie who is Gilbert’s young brother, Arnie is 17 years old living with a metal disability. There is also Gilbert’s sisters, Amy, the oldest, and Ellen, a 15 year old dramatic teenage girl. Their father is not present due to his suicide years ago. This leaves Gilbert to be the man of the house. Each character has unique personalities and each has their positive and negative qualities that they bring to the family. The main focus of this movie is how Gilbert and the rest of his family work through situations with Arnie’s disability, Mama’s obesity problem, and Ellen’s behavior problems. Although Arnie has a clear mental disability, each member of this family has their own disability. ! Arnie Grape is a young man living with a mental disability. Arnie shows signs of autism but the specific disability is not confirmed. Some things you see Arnie doing is flicking his nose, walking awkwardly, speaking out at inappropriate times, climbing trees or even the town water tower, having break downs where he yells and hits himself, and mimicking what others say or do. ! The family lives in a very small town in Iowa where the community seems to be very tight and everybody knows everybody. The community knows Arnie has a disability and that Gilbert is the one that takes care of him. The town seems almost be annoyed by the family and the problems that Arnie sometimes causes and judges them for not having the proper parents to take care of them. When Arnie is found on top of the town water tower, the towns people gather around and watch as Gilbert tries to get Arnie to come down. You hear a man say, “here we go again”. This is evidence that the town is familiar with Arnie’s disability and problems but are not a support system to the family. On the other hand, there are some people throughout the town that are accepting and willing to help out the family to make their life a little bit easier. One example to show this is that the owner of the grocery store where Gilbert works, allows Arnie to sit at the grocery store while Gilbert works. ! Since the movie begins with Arnie at the age of 17, you don’t see how the families initial reaction was to finding out that he had a disability. If I had to make an assumption, Arnie having a disability and the mother being obese, MIGHT of led to the father’s suicide but I can’t know for sure. The lack of a father, a mother
who needs to be taken care of, and a troubling teen are all risks for Arnie and his family to properly support and care for Arnie. As a whole family, they don’t show many characteristics of resiliency. The family just does what they can to get by and keep Arnie out of trouble, and sometimes they are unable to prevent Arnie from getting into trouble because of his disability. For instance, throughout the movie, you see Arnie run away from his family and they have no control to stop him or help him settle down. When he runs away, he climbs the town water tower and causes problems for himself, the family, and the town. There is no authoritative parent around to provide the proper love and strength to show Arnie what is right and wrong. ! The families culture is not your average American Macro-culture. They don’t hold any high expectations. They are simply just trying to get by. The mother is very much dependent on her children and the children don’t have any outside support. Arnie shows no signs of wanting to learn and the family shows no signs of wanting to do better. Gilbert is stuck at a dead end job and the sisters don’t want to work or help Gilbert to make Arnie more skilled and independent. They seem content with having to take care of Arnie for the rest of his life. The fact that Gilbert has to bathe Arnie every night means that they are not trying to push and help Arnie to be self-reliant. ! Throughout the movie, you see the family members in all of the stages of the grief cycle. The family is isolated from the community due to the mothers obesity problem, Arnie’s disability because it makes it hard for Arnie to be in the community and behave appropriately. Also, Ellen isolates herself from being seen with her family because she is embarrassed of what others will think. You see Gilbert get more comfortable throughout the movie when Becky is present. Becky becomes a very positive character and becomes a outside friend to Arnie. She becomes someone that Arnie can run to and someone that Gilbert can open up to. ! Anger is a reoccurring stage that you see throughout the movie. Gilbert gets angry about the stress of taking care of his family but often hides it. Usually Gilbert will isolate himself from the family when he feels angry. He either drives off in his truck or even goes into the basement and yells and throws things. He does all of this away from Arnie so he will not see this negative side. There is one situation in the movie where Arnie refuses to take a bath so Gilbert has to chase him around the house. Gilbert ends up grabbing Arnie and hitting him multiple times. Arnie then feels sad and threatened by Gilbert. This is huge because Arnie feels he can no longer trust the one person he looks up to. Holding in all of his emotions and being the only one with any control in the house takes a toll on Gilbert and he ends up taking it out on Arnie. Gilbert uses anger to cover up depression. He never shows or talks about his emotions and
of been there to take Arnie out of the tub so he wasn’t in there all night. This shows their lack of knowledge and lack of responsibility. ! It’s tough to be resilient when you are obese and can’t move off of the couch. Mama only gives Arnie attention when something negative happens. Arnie has to go to her and she will then show him her love and support. When she gets off the couch to go get Arnie from the police station, this really shows that she wants to be there for Arnie and support him but she physically can’t. She becomes protective at the police station by taking charge and demanding to get Arnie back. ! The life of Gilbert Grape is not exactly his ideal life but he does what he can to make it work and support Arnie and the rest of the family. The family comes together when most needed to show Arnie their support at his 18th birthday party. The day in age and the living environment make coping with Arnie’s disability difficult to understand to the family. They don’t receive any extended help from family or friends until Becky shows up. There are no IEP plans or test’s that specify Arnie’s disability and what the proper care for Arnie is. Gilbert takes on the responsibility of providing for his family and being a father figure to Arnie. You can tell that Gilbert isn’t always happy with his situation but he stays positive and keeps his head up because he know’s that he is all Arnie has.
