PREJUDICE

What is prejudice? A negative view on a type of people or group even when you don’t have any actual reason to dislike them. How do we see it in the story? Vincent not only hates Julien, but he also hates Jewish people even though he has no reason to hate them it's just how he was raised even if they didn’t do anything to him or his family.

PERSEVERANCE

What is perseverance? Doing something despite it being hard or difficult How do we see it in the story? We see perseverance it both Julien and Sarah. With Julien we see how he endures bullying and taunting throughout the story. With Sarah we see how see endures antisemitism during the war and being alone for long periods of time.

Characters

Authors develop characters by describing their personality and their appearance. We can call these character traits. They also have characters talk with one another through dialogue. Lastly, authors use conflict to give the character motivation.

TOURTEAU / JULIEN BEAUMIER

    • (^) Despite being awfully treated by others he continues to have a heart of gold and helps whenever somebody needs a helping hand.

THE LA FLEURS

    • (^) In the beginning the Beaumiers’s thought that the La Fleurs were conspiring with the Nazis, but it is later revealed that they were hiding some of their Jewish friends and their attic and that’s why they were anxious.

    • (^) They are anxious that they are going to be discovered by the Nazis and be taken away.

VINCENT

    • (^) He bully's Julien and is believed that he is the one who told the Nazis that the masquerade took children into the woods to try and keep them safe

    • (^) His internal conflict is with Julien and Sarah because he is against jews and hates disabled people.

THE BEAST OF GÉVAUDAN

What was the Beast of Gevaudan? A French myth that is like the big bad wolf in American Folk lore. (How is it used in the story?) In the beginning of the story, it is used as a symbol of fear but on pg.'s 155- it was used a beacon of safety from being killed by Vincent.

CONCENTRATION CAMP

What were the Concentration Camps? Concentration Camps were where the Nazis took Jew’s to either be put to work or if they didn’t seem “strong” enough be killed How did they appear in the story? It is shown on p.g 76 when the author says that Sarahs mother was taken to Auschwitz where unfortunately she eventually dies.

POLIO

What is polio? Polio is a disease that attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis How is it used In the story? It is used to help the reader understand how self-less he was because of how he risked his life to help Sarah escape.
