FROST
Most of his poems deals with the life and the atmosphere of rural new England. He uses the
traditional verse forms but Frost is not a traditional poet at all. He uses the language of everyday
life to create deep and psychologically complex poems. One of the most important theme is nature
and the humble aspects of every-day life.
Most of his poems are written in blank verse and his language is clear and conversational. He
doesn’t use any type of experimental language or forms of the modernist poets.
By using a simple language, he creates a connection with his readers so that the readers can
understand immediately his poetry (without any mediation) .
The road not taken
this poem is one of the most famous poems in English. It was written in 1916 and it is part of the
collection of 28 poems called Mountain Interval. In this poem, he represents a typical moment in
human life when ma has to take decision, and when he has to choose between an easy way and a
difficult way to reach his goal. The poet remembers a moment in which he stood (stare) in front of
two roads and he decided to take the second road because it appeared to be less frequented. The
poem did not want to come back to the crossroad again, and he knew that his decision will
influence his entire life.
These poem has four stanzas each one with five verse. The rhymes scheme is ABBAAB. The
poem is set in a wood and maybe it’s autumn the street are yellow because they are covered by
leaves and the grass. The setting is rural and Frost uses simple and humble style to speak about
universal themes.

Happy days Happy day is a two- act play written by Samuel Beckett. The two main characters are the middle aged woman Winnie, and her husband Willie. In Act one, Winnie is buried up (sepolta) to her waist in the sand under the sun. She is awakened by a bell, that signals the time for waking, and the time for sleeping. She has a bag with her and she takes out some objects from the bag, toothbrush, toothpaste, her glasses, lipstick, and music box and a revolver. All objects are the symbol of her past life. Her husband lives in a hole behind her and Winnie tries to talk with her husband, but she receives only brief answers. In Act two, Winnie is buried up to her neck and she cannot move her head. She is always awaken by the bell. She cannot see her husband, and he does not answer to her. The things in her bag now inspired only the memories of the past (she cannot use these objects anymore) and now it is very difficult to think that today will be another happy day. At the end, Willie is dressed with his black jacket and remind her the day when he asks her to marry him and she sings a love song.. The main themes: Loneliness – Winnie leaves in a state of loneliness. She only knows that Willie is present and he is listening to her. The setting of the play can be seen as the state of their married life. Winnie tries to compensate for her loneliness by using imagination. The prison of optimism There is strong contrast between the attempts of Winnie to be happy and the absurdity of her physical imprisonment. Winnie follows the normal routines of her life, brushing her teeth, looking at herself in the mirror and holding her parasol. Under the mask of optimism, she feel frustrated because she hope for a better future, but this future will never come. Winnie is the universal representation of the humanity after the world war: man tries to have an happy life in the world where being happy is only morall duty but it is impossible to achieve a condition of happiness End of optimism The objects in Winnie’s bag are the symbols of the end of optimism: all these object deteriorates , the toothpaste and the lipstick are running out and her parasol catches fire... Hollowness (il vuoto) of language Winnie often says that words are empty because they have no meaning in the situation that she is living but words refer only to the memory of her past life. She has only an illusion of dialogue. She spends most of the day speaking to herself, her speech is a monologue, even if she tries to involve Willie in the conversation. Can be divided into different sequence we need talks to Willie about her desire to be dissolved in
