Hi Jorgen, How are you? I’ve just come back from a week in London. It was an adventure. First of all, I almost didn’t catch my flight. There was an accident on the motorway and the bus was forty-five minutes late! But I managed to – could (0) board my flight in the end because I didn’t have any luggage to check in. I managed to – could (1) do almost everything I wanted to do. I could – managed to (2) go to the Tower of London, to the National Gallery, to the Tate Gallery, to Covent Garden and Camden Town. Unfortunately, when I went up the London Eye it was raining, so I couldn’t – wasn’t able to (3) see anything. I also wasn’t able to – couldn’t (4) get into Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. There were enormous queues, so I decided to go and see Sherlock Holmes’s house instead – I was able to – could get in (5) there immediately! I found the Londoners very helpful and friendly. I didn’t have any trouble understanding them as I’ve always spoken English. I could – managed to (6) speak like a native when I was just five years old. The food was surprisingly good. I walked around quite a bit before deciding where to eat but I managed to – could (7) have some good, cheap meals in pubs and I was able to – could (8) try food from all over the world, from South America, to Poland, to Vietnam. Anyway, I’d love to hear your news. Write soon, Johann

Dear Jo, How are you? I’m back from my two-week cultural exchange trip to a high school in Mumbai, India. I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy it but I ___ needn’t have worried___ (worry) (0) – it was really interesting! I stayed with a very nice family, the Banerjee’s, who had a son my age, Danesh, who I went to school with every day. I arrived at Mumbai airport very late on Sunday night but I slept very badly. Fortunately, Mrs Banerjee told me I _____________ (go) (1) to school until Tuesday, so I spent Monday relaxing. Indian school is quite hard compared to school in England. I’m lucky I _____________ (do) (2) any of the tests. In the first week I was there, I tried to do as much of the homework as possible, especially maths, but when I gave my maths homework to the teacher, she told me I _____________ (do) (3) it because I was just visiting (= essere di passaggio ). I had spent ages doing it, but I _____________ (make) (4) such an effort. I was also worried about the spicy food, but Danesh told me which dishes to avoid so I _____________ (eat) (5) any hot food because there are lots of delicious Indian dishes which have no chili in them. I took a waterproof coat and some boots with me because I know it can rain a lot there in the rainy season, but I _____________ (pack) (6) them. It was incredibly hot! I just needed an umbrella. That’s my news. What about you? Let’s meet soon. Pete
