The recent rise in tourism represents one of the main factors that have led to English becoming the most spoken language globally. For many, this might result in its future transformation in the only language that the entire earth population will have to adopt. If said prediction became true, it would certainly imply both upsides and downsides. One positive consequence of English being known by everyone would be the demolishment of the “language barrier” that often impedes effective communication between people who speak different languages. In other words, they would be able to understand each other without any linguistic difficulty. Moreover, those who intend to move abroad or even just to travel to visit a foreign country may feel more motivated by not having to learn a new language once English has become the default everywhere. On the other hand, making English one global language would present its negative aspects as well. To mention one, there would inevitably be a significant impact on the definition of culture and national identity. In fact, language has always occupied a crucial role in building one’s cultural background and has been fundamental in fuelling citizens’ patriotism for their country of origin since forever. Furthermore, the population might be reluctant to learn a new language and renounce to their original one as it would be like betraying their roots and ancestors. To conclude, considering the idea of English becoming the common language to fluently communicate among speakers from all over the world, would mean simplifying international dialogues. At the same time, it would also imply the disadvantage of the alteration of the meaning of culture and identity.
