Macbeth is the shortest tragedy written by William Shakespeare, but also the mostcomplex and
completeas regards the analysis of what happens in a criminal mind, precisely that of the protagonist.
Macbethinitially presents himself to the public as a brave man, a hero who fights for his country, buthe
becomes a murderer and a tyrant to satisfy his ambition and thirst for power. The three witches and
their prophecies fuel the ambitions of Macbeth and his wife, but the two characters pursue their goals
with determination and lack of scruples even if they are then tormented by guilt and pay with death for
the crimes they committed. clerk. Violence and bloodshedare alsothe central themes of the work, in
factMacbethconquered the throne by committing a horrendous crime and this will lead the man to
perpetrate other violent acts to defend his position. Thebloodalso represents the sense of guilt that
torments the two protagonists of the tragedy; Lady Macbeth, delirious, metaphorically tries to wash the
blood off her hands, but she knows very well that bloodstains cannot be removed from her conscience.
Theregicidewill inevitablysubvert the natural order of things, causing chaos, terrible storms,
catastrophes and even the animals will go insane. The chaos in the natural order of things reflects the
chaos generated in the political and social world, in fact, in the vision of the time, the well-being of the
sovereign was closely linked to the well-being of his nation. Thetragedy is rich in supernatural elements,
represented above all by thethree witches, called by the other charactersweird sisters(strange sisters).
They represent the dark forces of evil, have supernatural powers; they know Macbeth's weaknessesand
with their prophecies they induce him to act criminally to satisfy his ambition and at the same time
deceive him, especially with the final prophecies when they mistakenly make him believe that he is now
safe. The protagonist of the tragedy, Macbeth, is presented as a courageous man, a hero, but we
understand his true nature after the first encounter with the witches: he is a man blinded by his
ambition. Shakespeareshows us his inner torment caused by the awareness of his own actions and his
moral decadence; is repeatedly assailed by doubts before killing Duncan and, too In summary, the work
recounts the desperate rise of a nobleman who, from virtuous and faithful to his sovereign, transforms
into a cruel monster who does not stop in the face of any obstacle and physically eliminates all potential
enemies, including friends and relatives. However, the spiral of blood and violence ends up destroying
himself and his wife who always supports him in court plots.Precisely this female figure, Lady Macbeth,
represents the psychically ill part of the hero, the perverse adviser and instigator who, like a poisonous
snake, uses her husband as a tool to achieve power and satisfy her greed. Lady Macbethhas a very strong
personality andmanages to impose her will on her husband, who she manipulates thanks to the skilful
use of words. She reassures him after Duncan's murder and controls his passions and feelings with great
skill, but she too begins to feel remorse, walks in her sleep, loses her usual confidence, goes completely
insane and kills herself.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRUELTY AND VIRILITY
In Macbeth the theme of gender recurs frequently. Lady Macbeth manipulates her husband into
questioning his virility, wishes he were asexual, and does not contradict Macbeth when told that a
woman like her should only bear sons. Just as Lady Macbeth

Just as Lady Macbeth

spurs her husband to murder, so too Macbeth teases the pride of the assassins who will kill Banquo by questioning his virility. These actions show that the diabolical couple makes masculinity coincide with the most heinous violence and, every time they discuss virility, a new murder occurs in a short time.
