SOURCES:

written 5 years before the death of Shakespeare

main sources → Scom Hisa (history of Great Britain)

minor sources → Regd Sco’s Disr of Witc

plays of Seneca → have some influence on the figure of Lady Macbeth Shakespeare wrote this play to honor the King of Scotland because he was also in the group of King’s men.

PLOT:

In the beginning, there isn’t a prologue → but the prophecies of the witches are a sort of prologue ACT 1 After the war ( that Macbeth won) Macbeth and Banquo, two of King Duncan's generals, discover three witches. The witches' prophecy that Macbeth will be promoted twice : to Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. Banquo wants to know about him and they say that a king in his family will arrive, but Banquo isn't promised any kingdom himself. The generals want to hear more, but the "weird sisters'' disappear. Soon after, King Duncan names Macbeth Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his success in the recent battles. he realized that what the witches said was true → he worked the idea to become a king: this was fatal for him bc is the reason why he became mad The King then proposes to make a brief visit that night to Macbeth's castle. Lady Macbeth receives news from her husband about the prophecy and his new title.

ACT 2: THE MURDER OF DUNCAN

the 2 witches guide Macbeth to the castle → VISUALIZED THE FEAR

tell us how Macbeth started to have a mental disability but at the same time he thinks lucidly Macbeth tries to grab a dagger→ he demands if it’s real or a vision because he sees it in the air as if it’s his same grabber Macbeth hears the sound of the bella sound of a call to kill Duncan Lady Macbeth organized everything → Macbeth isn’t sure to do that so Lady M. wants to do that instead of him but in the end, Macbeth kills the king in the meantime, King Duncan arrived at the castle of Macbeth Lady Macbeth gives the guards drugged wine so Macbeth can enter and kill the King and also the two guards that he accuses of murder. He regrets this almost immediately, but his wife reassures him. → Lady M. is very manipulative bc she knows very well Macbeth Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee, fearing for their own lives; but they are, nevertheless, blamed for the murder. the murder of Duncan didn’t take place on the stage bc we’re talking about the King so to be respectful Shakespeare omitted this Macbeth hears a voice: it’s said that he’ll never sleep again Shakespeare says that sleep is very important and he makes a beautiful metaphor for it

MAIN THEMES: AMBITION = destroy everyone who gives in to it → Both Macbeth and his wife sacrifice their morals and honor for ambition Macbeth at the beginning is a good man but at the end he allows ambition to transform him into a heartless killer. Lady M. in the end is crushed and driven into madness by her sense of guilt FATE AND WITCHCRAFT = his mad desire to control everything and to have all the power bring him to death. BLOOD = This play is a bloodbath → it begins with a war and it ends with the suicide of Lady M and the death of Macbeth is also a potent symbol of guilt → lady m can’t wash away the blood from her hands and her conscience. REGICIDE = the most evil crime that could be committed: if you kill the king will be a disaster
