Addressing your reader
Engaging with your reader is fundamental in an article. In the box below write some expressions you could
use to involve the reader in your article.

Styling your Article.

Addressing your reader

Engaging with your reader is fundamental in an article. In the box below write some expressions you could use to involve the reader in your article. Am I the only one who…? Writing Styles

To improve the style of your article and engage with your reader more you can use expressions to give strong opinions. Complete these examples with one or two words. It’s absolutely amazing/unbelievable (+)/ unthinkable/awful (-)! It took my breath away. I will never admit/forget it. I could never have imagined it! There’s nothing in the world like it. Improve the style of these sentences to make them more engaging.

  1. It is interesting to note how much technology has changed our lives.
  2. Differences in generations over the past 30 years are interesting.
  3. It is not good we didn't have the same rights in the past.
  4. It is good but now we are all able to do the same things.

Linking ideas together

Another important style factor is how smoothly the information flows in each paragraph. Effective linking words and expressions can help. Complete these expressions with a word from the box below. For a start .. Secondly. / Thirdly./ Finally.... And then there’s the fact that .. On top of that.... Apart from that.... I must also mention ... As if this wasn’t enough , ... Give examples using: such as, particularly, like etc. fact mention top start such enough

Ending your article.

You want to make an impact on your reader, and for them to keep thinking about how interesting your article was even after they have finished reading it, so your last paragraph needs to be good. Complete these sentences to summarize what you should do in the last paragraph.

  • Finish with a question that reflects your initial question (don’t copy the same words)
    • End with the answer to the question
  • Give your opinion
