What is Professional Communication?

Conceptualizing Professional

Communication - Goffman(1969)

FRONTSTAGE It involves an audience (e.g. Lawyer and Client/ Doctor and Patient) BACKSTAGE Not accessible interactions

TRANSACTIONAL and RELATIONAL ASPECTS TRANSACTIONAL

  • Getting things done
  • Achieving outcomes RELATIONAL /(interactional)
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Creating positive working atmosphere
  • (culture-dependent)

Institutional Talk

Three main features (Drew and Heritage 1992 : 22 ):

1. orientation by at least one of the participants to

some core goal, task or identity conventionally

associated with the institution in question

2. Special and particular constraints on what one or

both of the participants will treat as allowable

contributions to the business at hand

3. Inferential frameworks and procedures that are

particular to specific institutional contexts

  • E.g. different speaking rights in court

layman” (Gunnarsson, Linell and Nordberg 1997:7)

PROFESSIONAL DISCOURSE

What professionals routinely do as a way of accomplishing their duties and responsibilities

INSTITUTIONAL DISCOURSE

It comprises those features which are attributed to institutional practice either manifestly or covertly by professionals (Sarangi and Roberts 1999)

Workplace discourse / Business discourse Workplace discourse

  • Spoken and written interaction occurring in a workplace setting (Koester 2010: 3)
  • Professional communication : Business discourse - Restricted to business settings broadly defined as work-related activity
