Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, said “Most of us have
overlapping identities which unite us with very dierent groups. We can love what we are,
without hating what – and who – we are not. We can thrive in our own tradition, even as we
learn from others, and come to respect their teachings”. !
Everybody is unique, so that means we all have dierent identities, but sometimes it happens
that some of us have some similarities, which bring them to unite in dierent groups. Despite
all the dierences, we can coexist peacefully, without a reason to fight. Actually, we could learn
something new from each others. !
Nowadays it is easier to be in touch with something dierent from our usual habits and
traditions, than in the past. Thanks to the evolution of technology we daily come across so
many cultural diversities, which range from the cuisine to the religion and have an important
impact on people’s way of living.!
Under many aspects this “fusion” among dierent cultures is positive. It actually changes
people’s minds, they become more open to diversity and respectful to traditions and ways of
living that are not their own. Beside this, people also learn something new about traditions that
are so far away from their reality. !
At the same time, it could also have the opposite result of a pacific existence. Dissimilarities
could also be the reason of struggles and tensions among people, who belong to dierent
“groups”. As it already happened in the past, cultural diversities can set a conflict o. !
Last year I had the opportunity to spend the entire school year in a small town in Illinois, USA.
As I arrived there, I realized that I had been catapulted in a completely dierent reality from the
one I was used to. The people around me had dierent habits and traditions. I enjoyed a lot

Last year I had the opportunity to spend the entire school year in a small town in Illinois, USA. As I arrived there, I realized that I had been catapulted in a completely different reality from the one I was used to. The people around me had different habits and traditions. I enjoyed a lot

learning new things and everyday was an adventure in this new world. Of course in this journey I came across difficulties and tensions because of different ideas, always linked to diverse cultural backgrounds, but for every single one of them a solution has been found. Always meet in the middle. To sum up diversity is part of our world and everybody is required to respect different traditions and cultures, and even learn something about them if it possible.
