William Blake was born in London in 1757. His origins were humble. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. He created a new kind of art which emphasised the power of the imagination. He made illustrations for the : John Milton and for the Bible, and also left a cycle of drawings inspired by Dante's (Divine Comedy). A political freethinker, he supported the French Revolution. Blake had a strong sense of religion. The most important literary influence in his life was the Bible, because it presented a complete vision of the world and its history. His poetry is from early romanticism because he rejects neoclassicism. He created the method of 'illuminated printing' which combined picture and poetic text. Blake died in London in 1827. SONGS OF INNOCENCE produced before the French Revolution. The narrator is a shepherd who receives inspiration from a child for his songs. The symbols are the rings, flowers and children. the poems dealing with childhood as a symbol of innocence. The language is simple and musical. SONGS OF EXPERIENCE During the period of terror in France. A more pessimistic view of life emerges from these songs. In these songs adulthood is treated. The two collections read together give an ironic vision of the situation. IMMAGINATION imagination is the means by which one can know the world. Divine vision = to see beyond material reality Only God, the child and the poet have this vision of things. The poet becomes a prophet who can know reality. SOCIAL PROBLEMS Black is concerned with political and social problems. he suported the abolition of slavery and egalitarian principles. He believed in revolution as a means of purification.
Then he was disappointed, he drew attention to the consequences: injustices and commercial exploitation. Victims of this period were: children, prostitutes, orphans and soldiers. STYLE Blake's poems have a simple structure and an original use of symbols. The verse is linear and rhythmic. Use of repetitions.
belongs to the songs of innocence. is composed of twenty seven-year verses, divided into two stanzas that respond to the metric pattern AA-BB-CC-DD EE. The poem opens with a question. the poet wants to know the origin of the lamb. The lamb learns about Christian symbolism and is a symbol of innocence and purity. Blake asks him if he knew his creator who gave him a soft coat and a tender voice. In the following verses Blake answers the same questions as he does. He claims that God is the creator. He too is a child, innocent and pure like the lamb. The Lexicon is full of archaisms: "thee", "dost", "thou", "thy". The pace is pressing with few subordinates. THE TYGER It's part of the songs of the experience. It is made up of 24 verses divided into 6 stanzas. The rhyme is kissed by AABB. The text of the poem opens with the introduction of the tiger, described as a creature that roams flaming in the nocturnal woods, causing fright. Blake asks a series of questions to figure out who is the creator of the tiger. Here Blake won't give any answers. The tiger represents a perturbing and demonic figure. The tiger is a symbol of the suffering caused by human experience. With this poem he wants to indicate that in the universe there are aspects that escape mankind such as the knowledge of evil. Verses full of musicality.
