Read the story, and then rank the five primary characters in the story (Gregory, Ivan, Abigail,
Sal, and Tony) according to how BAD they are. Of course, you shall be ready to justify your
ranking.
Gregory, Ivan, Abigail, Sal, and Tony were students many years ago when they
received their MBAs at a large and famous business school. In particular, Ivan and Abigail
became fast friends, doing everything together and remaining fast friends as the years have
gone by. Ivan even introduced Abigail to his significant other a few years ago. Gregory is
now the owner of a large firm, Crocodile Construction, which frequently bids on jobs for the
government. Abigail works in an office which oversees construction bids for various
government projects. Unfortunately, in recent years, Gregory has seriously overestimated
several important bids, resulting in his losing several potentially profitable jobs. He is now in
extreme danger of going bankrupt.
One day, Gregory calls Abigail on the phone, looking for sympathy, and they
commiserate with each other over Gregory’s financial difficulties. Abigail lends a
sympathetic ear, and tries to help Gregory cheer up. Several days later, Abigail begins the
executive summary for bids on a large construction project in which Gregory is one of the
bidding firms. She notices that Gregory’s bid is significantly higher than the lowest bid.
Given his tenuous financial position, Abigail is reluctant to have Gregory lose yet another bid.
Even though she knows it is against the rules to give him any information, she calls him and
tells him the dollar amount and project specifications of the lowest bid. Gregory promptly
revises his bid to come in just under the previously low bid, and sends it to Abigail, who uses
it to replace Gregory’s previous bid.
As low bid, Gregory gets the contract. He not only avoids bankruptcy, but his
financial future seems to be assured, as the contract has several renewal clauses, giving him
an advantage over any possible future bidders. In addition, this project is highly visible so is
likely to bring him other construction jobs as well, giving his financial future a decidedly rosy
outlook.
Tony, who works at a local brokerage and occasionally dates one of Abigail’s
employees, overhears Gregory one night in a local bar, and figures out that Abigail may have
helped Gregory get the bid on a key project. A week later, Tony invites Abigail’s employee
out for dinner and asks numerous questions about Abigail and about Gregory’s bid. He is able
to obtain enough details about the incident from his date to put things together.

In particular, Ivan and Abigail became fast friends, doing everything together and remaining fast friends as the years have gone by. Ivan even introduced Abigail to his significant other a few years ago. Gregory is now the owner of a large firm, Crocodile Construction, which frequently bids on jobs for the government. Abigail works in an office which oversees construction bids for various government projects. Unfortunately, in recent years, Gregory has seriously overestimated several important bids, resulting in his losing several potentially profitable jobs. He is now in extreme danger of going bankrupt.

One day, Gregory calls Abigail on the phone, looking for sympathy, and they commiserate with each other over Gregory’s financial difficulties. Abigail lends a sympathetic ear, and tries to help Gregory cheer up. Several days later, Abigail begins the executive summary for bids on a large construction project in which Gregory is one of the bidding firms. She notices that Gregory’s bid is significantly higher than the lowest bid. Given his tenuous financial position, Abigail is reluctant to have Gregory lose yet another bid. In addition, this project is highly visible so is likely to bring him other construction jobs as well, giving his financial future a decidedly rosy outlook.

Tony, who works at a local brokerage and occasionally dates one of Abigail’s employees, overhears Gregory one night in a local bar, and figures out that Abigail may have helped Gregory get the bid on a key project. Meanwhile, Tony, who has always been attracted to Abigail even though he knows she is seeing someone else, decides to take advantage of the situation. He goes to Abigail and tells her that she must have sex with him or he will reveal what he knows—that he has no qualms what-so-ever about turning her in to the government if she does not agree to meet his demands. If convicted of providing information to one of the bidders, Abigail will likely lose her job and also stands a good chance of a significant fine.

In a panic, Abigail goes to her old friend, Ivan. She tells him that she needs his advice on a confidential problem, and then proceeds to ask him what to do, revealing everything that has happened. He refuses to get involved and Abigail believes she has no choice other than to meet Tony’s demands. Tony keeps his promise to Abigail after she has sex with him. He does not turn her in for revealing the low bid information to Gregory, continuing to date Abigail’s employee — and as promised, keeping the whole incident a secret.

Now, a “clean up the government” program sponsored by an oversight board announces that it will give informants 10% of fines collected from errant employees. Although Abigail had spoken with Ivan believing her “secrets” would be kept confidential, Ivan, who has some financial difficulties of his own, turns Abigail in. Abigail is convicted by the government oversight board. She is fined $100,000 and put on disciplinary probation with a good chance that she will eventually lose her job. Ivan is able to pay off all his debts and even put some money aside with his 10% fee.

Distraught and upset, Abigail goes to Gregory to see if he will lend her the money to pay the fine so that she does not have to declare bankruptcy or have the government put a lien on her home and sell it to collect the money. Gregory feels Abigail is a definite credit risk, and tells her that he is not sure that she will be capable of paying him back given her situation. He refuses to loan her any money.

Heartsick and despondent, Abigail turns to Sal with her tale of woe. Sal, feeling compassion for Abigail, goes to Gregory’s construction firm late one night when no one is there and sets a fire, demolishing his warehouses and equipment, destroying him financially.
