ACTIVITY 1
Watch the video on “A Failure to Communicate” and answer the questions as a group on page 7.
I want you to do your group discussion on our Facebook page so that I can monitor who are
participating in the discussion. See to it that you post your discussions only on your respective
groupings for easy checking.
1. Who is the sender? Tell us the problem encountered.
●Using the linearity assumption of the Transmission and Effect Perspective, we
believe that this was a two-way communication with the woman with niqab as the
sender. She verbally expressed her message of asking the receiver for her location.
However, the receiver was not able to give a feedback or reply right away as she
was deaf that caused a misunderstanding between the two as the sender thought
she was being disrespected.
2. Who is the receiver? Why did she fail to interpret the message/s of the sender?
●We also believe that this was an interpersonal communication that considers the
possibility of the receiver, which is the woman who is deaf giving a reply or
feedback. However, she failed to interpret the message of the sender as she could
not understand the medium that the latter used – which is through audio/verbal.
Additionally, even though she is used to understanding people by lips, she was not
able to apply this as the woman in niqab was covering most of her face, including
her mouth.
3. What is the interference that caused the misunderstanding of the two?
●In studying this conversation, we believe that there were various factors that
caused their misunderstanding even though they had a text-to-speech converter
gadget as the medium. First, there were physical noises/interferences such as the
loud arrival of the train, the announcement voice-over, and the gadget getting
drained that interrupted the sender, every time she tries to send her information.
Second, there was a physiological noise as the receiver was deaf.
4. How did the two resolve the conflict?
●We believe that every person in a communication process has their own field of
experience that contains all their knowledge, feelings, culture, and everything that
can influence the way they communicate. Thus, when we communicate, we have
to take note of the FOE of the person we are talking to, to understand them – a
situation that the sender was unable to do on early points of their conversation.
However, as the sender understood the situation of the receiver and vice-versa,
they were able to find a zone where their field of experiences could interact which
is the ability to demonstrate nonverbal expressions. The sender enacted her
destination by acting out gestures and pointing clues. Thus, communication took
place.
