Wound irrigation removes bacteria and foreign pathogens from the wound by flushing them out
with saline via high pressure irrigation/lavage
May require a wound culture. Irrigation
frequency may need to be slowed. Alginate
dressing may be utilized.
Wound healing is slowed, drainage
increases, new tissue is irritated.
Educate patient on wound care to prevent
them from unnecessarily causing irritation
during their irrigation of wound. Educate on
sterile maintenance of wound. Teach proper
irrigation technique if patient will have to
complete on their own at home.
Keep wound clear of necrotic tissue,
infection, or debris. Lesion will show
shrinkage and will be free of redness,
swelling, yellow or black tissue.
Assess initial dressing, establish a sterile
field, assess the progress of the wound's
healing. Irrigate site with saline from clean to
dirty edges. Apply clean dressings to the
wound.
Replacing old dressing, irrigation necessary
if there is excessive drainage, exudate,
debris, or necrotic tissue is present.
