1) Alpha - adrenergic blockers Block alpha-adrenergic receptors, resulting in vasodilation and decreased blood pressure They decrease VLDL and LDL that are responsible for atherosclerosis (build-up of fatty plaques in the arteries). In addition, they increase HDL levels ("friendly lipoprotein") Alpha blockers do not affect glucose metabolism and they do not affect respiratory function. They are safe for patients with diabetes and COPD. These drugs cause sodium and water retention with edema. Diuretics are frequently given with alpha- adrenergic blockers to decrease fluid accumulation in the extremities. Examples of Alpha- adrenergic Blockers Selective Alpha - Adrenergic Blockers Cardura (Doxazosin Mesylate) Minipress (Prazosin HCI) Hytrin (Terazosin HCI) Non-selective Alpha - Adrenergic blockers Dibenzyline (Phenoxybenzamine HCI) Regitine (Phentolamine) Priscoline HCI (Tolazoline HCI) (Phentolamine, Phenoxybenzamine and Tolazoline are more potent alpha blockers and are used primarily for hypertensive crisis and severe hypertension due to pheochromocytoma).
Side - effects and adverse reactions (Alpha - adrenergic Blockers) Due to Dizziness Faintness Postural Lightheadedness Hypotension Increased heart rate Nausea Drowsiness Nasal congestion caused by vasodilation Edema Weight gain Side effects of Phentolamine o Hypotension o Reflex tachycardia o Nasal congestion o GI disturbances
