1) Adrenergic neuron blockers (peripherally
acting sympatholytics)
Block norepinephrine release from the SNS, that
results in lowering of BP. There is decrease both in
cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance.
Orthostatic hypotension is a common side effect;
advise client to rise slowly from a reclining or
sitting position.
Use of Reserpine may cause vivid dreams,
nightmares, and suicidal ideation.
These drugs may cause sodium and water
retention. Diuretic is usually prescribed to reduce
peripheral edema.
Examples of Adrenergic neuron blockers
oHylorel (Guanadrel Sulfate)
oIsmelin (Guanethidine Monosulfate)
2) Alpha - 1 and Beta - 1 adrenergic blockers
By blocking the alpha - 1 receptor, dilatation of the
arterioles and veins occurs, therefore blood
pressure is lowered.
By blocking the cardiac beta - 1 receptor, the heart
rate and atrioventricular (AV) contractility are
decreased.
Clients with severe asthma should not take large
doses because these medications cause
bronchoconstriction.

  1. Adrenergic neuron blockers (peripherally acting sympatholytics)  Block norepinephrine release from the SNS, that results in lowering of BP. There is decrease both in cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance.  Orthostatic hypotension is a common side effect; advise client to rise slowly from a reclining or sitting position.  Use of Reserpine may cause vivid dreams, nightmares, and suicidal ideation.  These drugs may cause sodium and water retention. Diuretic is usually prescribed to reduce peripheral edema.  Examples of Adrenergic neuron blockers o Hylorel (Guanadrel Sulfate) o Ismelin (Guanethidine Monosulfate) 2) Alpha - 1 and Beta - 1 adrenergic blockers  By blocking the alpha - 1 receptor, dilatation of the arterioles and veins occurs, therefore blood pressure is lowered.  By blocking the cardiac beta - 1 receptor, the heart rate and atrioventricular (AV) contractility are decreased.  Clients with severe asthma should not take large doses because these medications cause bronchoconstriction.

 Side effects include orthostatic hypotension, GI disturbances, nervousness, dry mouth, and fatigue. Large doses may cause AV heart block.  Examples: o Cartrol, Ocupress (Carteolol HCI) Trandate, Normodyne (Labetalol HCI)
