Abstract Ageism is the discrimination of people based on their age. Age discrimination is becoming a common vice around the globe. This paper examines the concept of age discrimination and describes an example that supports the concept and its impacts. Introduction Aging is a normal biological phenomenon in living things. It is the process of becoming older. In humans, the term aging denotes the transition from the early life stages to the later stages of life. Individuals within the late adulthood stages of life are considered to be in the aging bracket. Human society does not perceive aging as normalcy. It is considered an abnormality; hence, it constantly discriminates against older people. Discrimination against the aging population may be described as ageism, and it's becoming a global challenge according to the World Health Organization; statistically, half of the global population practices ageism, and it's becoming detrimental to the existence of the older population (World Health Organization, 2021). This paper discusses the concept of ageism and an example of it. Ageism is becoming a commonly practiced vice, but most people hardly know that they are perpetuating a form of discrimination. Coined by Robert Butler in late 1960s, ageism has become a vice indoctrinated into society and directly hardens the lives of older people (Greenwood, 2020). An example of ageism would be a common statement that goes, "Old people go there!" This is a common statement used in professional fields, especially when serving people of different ages. However, the old is always separated from the rest and served differently. Most professionals like to serve the old from senior centers. This is because of the stereotype that being around the old is undesirable; thus, it needs to be served differently.
