Axial Skeleton
Skeleton
- framework of the body
- it protects and support the body
*There are 206 bones in a adult body
* 80 bones form the Axial Skeleton
*126 forms the Appendicular Skeleton
Axial Skeleton
- the part of the skeleton that consist of the bones of the
head and trunk of a vertebrate
Trunk
- consist of the sternum, ribs and vertebral column
Skull
- two sets
=Cranium Bones
-enclose the brain
- Flat bone
=Facial Bones
-hold eyes in anterior position
- attachment site of the facial muscles
- allow facial muscles to express feelings
-Irregular Bone
- bones are joined by sutures
- only the mandible is attached by a freely movable joint
*Sutures- interlocking joint. Bones that are movable
*Fontanelle- membranous or soft in nature. It allows the
brain to grow and develop
-the fontanelles will harden and become sutures at
the age of 6 months to 1 year old.
*Ossification- process where Sutures become
Fontanelle.
*Intramembranous Ossification- calcification or
hardening of the membranous bone
8 Cranial Bones Protect the Brain
1.Frontal Bone - aka know as forehead
2.Occipital Bone- forms the floor or the back of the
skull
3 Ethmoid Bone- forms the roof of the nasal cavity
- contains the:
=Crista galli- outermost covering of the brain
=Cribriform plate
4 Sphenoid Bone- butterfly shaped bone
5.&6. Parietal Bones (pair) - posterior of frontal bone
7.&8. Temporal Bones (pair)- lies interior to the parietal
bone
14 Facial Bones
1.&2. Maxillae (pair)
3.&4. Palatine Bones (pair)
5.&6. Lacrimal Bones (pair)
7.&8. Zygomatic bones (pair)
9.&10. Nasal Bones (pair)
11. Vomer Bone
12.&13. Inferior nasal conchar (pair)
14. Mandible
Coronal Suture- connects the frontal and the parietal
bone
Sagittal Suture- connect the left and right Parietal lobe
Squamous Suture- connects the parietal bone to the
temporal bone
Lambdoid suture - connects the occipital bone to the
pair of parietal bone
