program. My role is to ensure that course content and supplementary clinical instruction supports
learning outcomes outline by the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)
competencies. The main goal of the program is to provide nursing students with the information
they need to pass their board exam and be knowledgeable professional nurses. The learning
outcomes for my specific course align with the Bachelor degree in Nursing (BSN) program
learning outcomes for Tarleton State University.

  1. What are your organization’s expectations of you in regards to your role in teaching, scholarship, and maintaining your clinical expertise in practice? All faculty members involved in classroom education within the Tarleton State nursing program are Certified Nurse Educators (CNE). We all hold a Master degree in nursing education and have several years of clinical experience. In addition to teaching, I maintain PRN employment as a bedside nurse on a labor and delivery unit at the local hospital. This allows me to maintain my clinical expertise and skills that are necessary not only for me, but for the nursing students I instruct.
  2. What is your role in curriculum development, improvements, and program accreditation? The Tarleton State University nursing program is accredited by the Texas Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. All faculty members are included in curriculum and syllabi development. Course content is derived from survey data and National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rates. This helps us identify problem areas or gaps in the education we are providing, and improve our curriculum.
  3. How has technology transformed nursing education and your role as an educator? Our nursing program is becoming more and more technology-driven. Online courses, simulations, and exams have become standard within our curriculum. While lectures have stayed classroom-based, most of the other tasks are performed online. While online instruction allows for more flexibility for both the instructor and students, it can be harder for students to maintain accountability and professionalism when they do not have regular face-to-face interaction.
  1. What factors are considered when developing curriculum? Curriculum development is primarily designed based on NCLEX pass rates, course completion rates, and surveys. Syllabi and course goals or outcomes are defined by QSEN competencies. The main goal of our nursing program is to prepare students for the NCLEX and professional licensure. Based on all of this data, we specify what information is crucial for the students to know and build our curriculum around it.
  2. Do you design your course curriculum by yourself or is it a multidisciplinary approach? Our faculty in the Tarleton nursing program works very well together and collaborates for almost every course. Many of our educators have years of experience in various nursing backgrounds that are useful when developing course content. We learn a lot from each other and share our experiences and knowledge so that every educator, and the program as a whole, can be successful.
