TERM 1
Apraxia is..
DEFINITION 1
a motor planning disorder- impaired se quencing of muscle
movements for volitional actions- cau sed by damage to cortical
structures that sequence moveme nts- marked by inconsistency of
productions- NOT the result of musc le weakness, slowness, or
disco ordinationsequencing of movem entsNOT a strength issue
(unlike dysarthria)difficulty with volunt ary tasks(dysarthria -
voluntary and involuntary)
TERM 2
types of Apraxia
DEFINITION 2
- Ideational- Ideomotor--> Limb Apraxia--> Oral Apraxia-->
Apraxia of Speech
TERM 3
Ideational Apraxia
DEFINITION 3
the inability to make use of an object or gesture due to lost
idea of the action- due to "lost knowledge" of the function of
the object/gesture- left parietal damage, often resolve
quickly- "rare"- ex: using a fork
TERM 4
Ideomotor Apraxia
DEFINITION 4
inability to use an object or make a gesture due to loss of the
motor movements- able to approximate the movement, but
not sequence the steps to complete itex: brushing teeth-
impacts volitional movements more than automatic onesex:
waving goodbye- imitation is easier than spontaneous
production
TERM 5
ideomotor apraxia: limb
apraxia
DEFINITION 5
inability to sequence movements using hands, arms, legs-
interferes with activities of daily living (dressing, eating)-
would this impact writingvideo:

Apraxia is..

a motor planning disorder- impaired sequencing of muscle

movements for volitional actions- caused by damage to cortical

structures that sequence movements- marked by inconsistency of

productions- NOT the result of muscle weakness, slowness, or

disco ordinationsequencing of movementsNOT a strength issue

(unlike dysarthria)difficulty with voluntary tasks(dysarthria -

voluntary and involuntary)

TERM 2

types of Apraxia

DEFINITION 2

- Ideational- Ideomotor--> Limb Apraxia--> Oral Apraxia-->

Apraxia of Speech

TERM 3

Ideational Apraxia

DEFINITION 3

the inability to make use of an object or gesture due to lost

idea of the action- due to "lost knowledge" of the function of

the object/gesture- left parietal damage, often resolve

quickly- "rare"- ex: using a fork

TERM 4

Ideomotor Apraxia

DEFINITION 4

inability to use an object or make a gesture due to loss of the

motor movements- able to approximate the movement, but

not sequence the steps to complete itex: brushing teeth-

impacts volitional movements more than automatic onesex:

waving goodbye- imitation is easier than spontaneous

production

TERM 5

ideomotor apraxia: limb

apraxia

DEFINITION 5

inability to sequence movements using hands, arms, legs-

interferes with activities of daily living (dressing, eating)-

would this impact writingvideo:

ideomotor apraxia: Oral

Apraxia

inability to sequence oral movements not related to speech- may

have difficulty on an oral motor exam- may be accompanied by-->

groping : tongue is moving around in mouth looking to find right

placement (trouble initiating movement they are trying to do)-->

incomplete or partially complete actions --> hesitations -

may have trouble coughing/swallowing on command (ex: "cough")-

may still be able to swallow while eating, laugh at jokes, ect.- this

set of symptoms alone has little impact on functioning--> only

important when it co-occurs with Apraxia of speech

TERM 7

Apraxia of speech

DEFINITION 7

impaired motor sequencing for speech tasks- may co-occur

with other apraxias- typically caused by left frontal love

lesions- like to co-occur with aphasia and dysarthria

TERM 8

Apraxia is primarily a disorder

of..

DEFINITION 8

articulation and prosody * although apraxia can impact a

number of subsystems

TERM 9

Motor Speech Programmer

DEFINITION 9

a theorize structure in the brain that receives input from

linguistic, motor, sensory, and emotional centers and plans

precise muscular contractions- theorized to reside near

Brocas (tends to co-occur more with Broca's)

TERM 10

Apraxia of Speech: Articulation

DEFINITION 10

most common errors - errors can be of any type:-->

placement, manner, voicing--> substitutions, distortions,

omissions, additions, repetitions--> Anticipatory (Llama -->

Mama) or perseverative (Viking --> viving)- more difficulty

with multisyllabic words, or complex sequences- errors may

be consistent or inconsistent

Differential Diagnosis: Apraxia vs. Aphasia

A disorder of.. Apraxia: Motor PlanningAphasia:

language Characterized by.. Apraxia: mispronunciation; erors in

productionAphasia: Anomia Errors are a break down in.. Apraxia:

sequencing movementsAphasia: word retrieval; comprehension;

expressive language Lesion is typically.. Apraxia: more anterior

(frontal lobe - area in front of motor strip and near

Broca's)Aphasia: Anterior or Posterior (Broca's, Wernickes,

Both) Prosody is.. Apraxia: Likely impairedAphasia: Likely in tact

TERM 17

Treatment

DEFINITION 17

  • may look similar to aphasia therapy- build up to producing more

complex phrases- emphasis on modeling and minimize

explaining --> if the client is having trouble controlling muscles of

mouth...dont explain how to produce that word (move tongue

behind teeth) instead have them say the word with you or keep

repeating it to them- repetitive drill work is essential- focus on

functionality as early as possible- melodic intonation therapy

may be beneficial
