What is the era all about?
European settlers developing colonies and migrating to North American environments. They were influenced by imperial goals and cultures, and competed with each other and North Americans for resources.
What other time period is most similar to this era (ie synthesis)? And Why?
The time period of period one (1491-1607) is the most similar to this era. Both of those eras include expansion and coming to the New World. In period 1, Columbus came from Spain and in period 2, the English come to the New World starting with the settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. They both include European exploration in the New World.
What 2-3 events are central to the era?
1607: Jamestown- first permanent English settlement formed in Virginia.
1492: Columbian Exchange- transatlantic trade of goods, people, and ideas. Slaves were brought through the Middle Passage. Europeans brought Christianity, iron technology, and disease. New World sent crops such as corn and tobacco back to the Old World.
1720-1750: Great Awakening- religious movement centered around forming a personal relationship with God. John Edwards and John Whitefield were key figures.
