This in conjunction with the Red Scare limited labor unions’ powers

1917-1918: Espionage and Sedition Acts 1919 Chicago race riots, labor riots

-Stifled free speech/bad mouthing the government -Riots due to fear of socialism, other races/ethnicities -Strikes due to economic decline post WWI

-Justified US to arrest socialist leaders within the US due to rising fear of socialism -Showed continuity of discrimination against blacks despite growth of Harlem Renaissance

1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff

-raised tariffs, which further discouraged international trade which worsened GD -fueled international trade wars

-Example of a Republican policy worsening GD and providing basis to start favoring Dem party

1932 Bonus Army -ex veterans request their pensions from their service early, denied and chased out by Hoover

-Example of Hoover making himself less and less popular

1932 Reconstruction Finance Corporation

-early effort to recover large businesses but not nearly enough

-Hoover’s rep policies were too conservative and did not do enough

1933 FDR Inaugural address + fireside chats

-proposed vague plan of recovery, significant as every single type of person/class/ethnicity ALL voted one political side in this time, the GD worsened even more

-goal to earn US people’s trust in government -election united US people

1933-1938: New Deal -series of 3 R’s:

-created FDIC which reformed banking management and saved its industry -Established a ‘policing’ force in the stock market

-gov provided jobs to ordinary citizens -First New Deal policy centered around social welfare

1933 National Recovery Administration

-Effort to recover pre-industrial production levels
