War of 1898: First effort @ imperialism -Primary for economic reasons -Motivated by anglo-saxonism , nationalism
1898 Treaty of Paris US gains Philippines, annexes Hawaii -Purpose to gain sphere of influence -Secures western imperialist power
1900 Boxer rebellion US joins multinational force to crush Boxer Rebellion in China
-Shows US involvement in foreign affairs (progressive government)
Anti-imperialist league Organization which opposed imperialism, made up of various dif people
-US imperialism went against its founding values (Constitution)
1902 Platt Amendment Granted Cuba semi-independence -Purpose to retain sphere of influence
1904 Roosevelt Corollary
Overturned Monroe Doctrine, asserted US as ‘world police’
-Shows US involvement in foreign affairs (progressive government)

US retains free trade rights with East Asia in an agreement with Japan

-Stifled free speech/bad mouthing the government -Riots due to fear of socialism, other races/ethnicities -Strikes due to economic decline post WWI
-Justified US to arrest socialist leaders within the US due to rising fear of socialism -Showed continuity of discrimination against blacks despite growth of Harlem Renaissance

-raised tariffs, which further discouraged international trade which worsened GD -fueled international trade wars
