of his or her opinion or claim

using FACTS AND EVIDENCE.

An Argument Paper:

  • Offers the reader reasons, facts, and evidence. For example: research statistics, find quotations from the novel to support your claim. Generally, you need at least 3-‐5 facts, reasons, evidence to prove your claim to be true.

PARTS to the ESSAY:

  • #1 CLAIM: the main point you want readers to accept. Your stance on a position.
  • It is MORE than just an opinion or a personal preference.
  • It is a statement that:
    • You think is true
    • Can support with accurate information
    • Is debateable – some may disagree with it

FORMAT:

  • This paragraph introduces the topic and hooks the reader.
  • You state the claim in this paragraph.
  • The claim is your position or opinion on a subject.

Body Paragraph(s)

  • You must STATE and EXPLAIN the reasons you support your claim.
  • You need evidence to support your reasons.
  • Without evidence you will lose the argument.

Formal Essay

  • Never use I, my,me, or any other personal pronoun.
  • Use a persuasive tone.
  • Sometimes you have to put aside your personal beliefs and write about something you may not agree with.

Last words…

  • Facts win arguments. Not whining, begging, pleading, crying.
  • Think about the last argument you had with someone. Did you win? Why or Why not?
