By : Andres Ricardo Ayala Cosulich Have you ever played an online video game? Well, The truth is that in my own experience I enjoy playing online video games, mainly when I play with my friends, that's the main reason I play video games because you can meet people and socialize with different people. We are social beings, that's why we socialize however we can. With the onset of the pandemic, our social lives changed drastically, to the point, if we want to socialize we have to do it in other ways that were not so common before. From the first day of the quarantine, I knew that I would no longer be able to socialize as I did before. I started playing a video game called Fortnite with friends from Mexico. When I started gaming, I remember I started gaming in a discounted and unlimited way until I had to limit myself. Over time things changed. After all, I stopped playing for a while because I sold my gaming laptop, and I started playing video games again until I bought a new phone and started playing PUBG mobile. In this game, I met several people who became my friend's overtime. Something that made me very curious is that I talked and socialized more with the friends I made in PUBG mobile than with my friends from Mexico when I played with them. To know more about the change in people social life, I interviewed one member of the group I play with, Johan Guerrero. I asked him how his social life changed with the pandemic, he replied with an extensive reply that in few words relate how the pandemic has drastically limited his social life. Many people like my friend cannot socialize in person as they did before, so they have resorted to interact in other ways like playing online video games. After hearing this, a question dawned on me. Is this way of socializing going to last beyond the pandemic, or it be less resorted for social purposes as now?
Before the pandemic, video game enthusiasts have been using tech like this to build friendships online and stay connected for years. It just wasn't as common as now. Most people prefer to socialize and meet people physically because we like to see stuff in person, not through a screen. With the start of the pandemic, many people began to socialize through online video games, and thus the communities of different video games that already existed grew and became stronger. There are many communities in the world of video games, some are closer or bigger than others, although their main goal is that people socialize with other people through online videogames. Video games are like a bridge that connects people from different parts of the world. The main reason why communities in video games are large and sometimes friendly and united is that they share something in common. Some studies show that apart from the cognitive benefits that video games give, it also helps mental health because video games can be highly sociable. It has been shown that social interactions improve self-esteem and emotional contentment. It may seem less beneficial to socialize online than in real life, but talking to friends or playing with them through a video game can be very handy to combat social isolation. People who play video games can identify with other players, as they share great interest and often have similar units. People also talk about other things that are not related to the game forming deep friendships that can lead people to get to know each other in real life. Socialization is an empirical activity carried out by humanity that is sought to be carried out at all times regardless of circumstances. Now that you know how socializing through video games affects our life. I leave you with a question. Will you socialize with your friends and meet new people through online video games? If you do it. It's normal and has always been, but not much as now it will probably continue being a bridge that connects people for a while.
