Peer pressure is the pressure of one peer group to the other peer group. Peers are the people you interact with, e.g being a student, your peers are the ones you study with or your family. Peer pressure is a serious issue as it can create drastic problems to one person and completely ruin the life of that person. Peer pressures are of many kinds. It can be the pressure of parents, the pressure of grades, jealousy, changing environment, favoritism and making fun of. Studies have shown that teenagers usually face peer pressure as they have their interaction to the environment more. Questionnaires were made and interviews of different students facing peer pressures were taken. Results showed that almost most of the students were facing certain pressures and have their lives disturbed. This is a serious problem and it should be removes from this society. It can be done by adopting a little serious attitude and by counselling.
Everyone need is to hear positive things about themselves, be recognized and valued by others. It’s in their nature. When people hear negative things about themselves, they start adopting those negativity considering it true. In other words that negativity becomes the truth of their lives which is in fact not true. Peer pressure influences drastically to the person on the receiving end. Peer pressure may be expressed or implied. In expressed peer pressure, an individual is forces to adapt to the environment, culture or the norms. They are forced to change their attitude, values and behavior. Implied peer pressure is more dangerous and is harder to deal with. For example, a group of peers may make fun of how the other peer is dressed up. This can lead the person to fall into depression. Research have shown that usually youngsters in their teenage fall a prey to peer pressure. Teenagers usually want to do what they like and when they don’t find that kind of environment, it kills them. They feel every bit of other person words which leads them to ruin their lives. Some people due to the pressure of their parents, have indulged themselves in activities which are un bearable in this society. Some of the youngsters are forced to choose the field set by their parents and when they can’t study it, they become mentally disturbed. This is nothing but to pressurize your own children to jump into the hell fire and they are unable to say “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations.” Students universities also face peer pressure. Pressure due to grades, bullying, mocking, favoritism etc. Some students cannot see the other student’s success or they don’t want the other student to get good grades than him. Such students feel it real hard and due to this they continuously lose their own caliber. Some people make fun of the one student in the class and that one student face those harsh words. Even though he try to say something in return but he couldn’t due to lack of courage. Such students who bear the pressure live a really hard life. The outcomes of these pressures are drastic. Students may give up on their lives just because they couldn’t face it. Some students couldn’t face the favoritism of teachers. Some teachers favor selective students and the other ones, even though they put all their efforts, still they don’t get
grades. Those students then say “what’s the purpose of studying when after all the effort you still don’t get anything” so, they simply quit studying and just go with the flow.
We took interview of different students facing different kinds of pressures. Some were facing the pressure due to grades, some due to jealousy, some due to favoritism, and some were facing the pressure of their parents implementing their choices on their children. At first it was hard to find such students because no one was willing to tell their personal stories and to tell what peer pressures they were currently facing. When we asked our questions, students ignored us to the level they possibly could. Some took them as a joke. Those were the ones who don’t feel the pain and are pretty much far away from all the pressures. They didn’t answer properly which was a great hurdle for us. Those who feel the pain and have experienced or were experiencing peer pressures on a daily basis gave us the answers seriously. Such students were of much help for us. We went to different classes. Juniors and our class mates cooperate with us to some extent but seniors didn’t even bother to answer properly as if it would be a disgrace to their personality. This is how we gather a little information on peer pressure and some of the personal stories of students facing a lot of pressures in their lives.
The data was collected through questionnaires, and thoroughly analyzed according to the research objectives of the study. A total of 30 respondents were surveyed. The results show that female respondents were more into this problem than the male ones. Most of the respondents indicated that they knew the meaning of peer pressure of which most of them were aware of it existing in real life as they had personally experienced it. The rest indicated they were not aware of peer pressure. The respondents had different feelings about the effects they get from peer pressure. Most of the respondents have faced the pressure due to grades. Even though they study really hard still they couldn’t get enough marks to satisfy themselves and their parents. Then the get scolded by their parents. Such students get into so much depression that they couldn’t bear the pressure of studies anymore and they lose their caliber level or they totally leave their studies and don’t even bother to try. Almost 5-6 of our respondents were in this category. One of them was fighting with depression. Another is the factor or favoritism. There are certain teachers who favor selective students and the other students, even though they try to achieve good, couldn’t get so. Even in our department and in our class there are cases of favoritism. Boys think male teachers favor girls and it is true to some extent (not all male teachers do this). Girls on the other hand said that the ones who are attention seeker get the attention of teachers and they are favored by teachers.
