Students’ Name: Cornejo Zelaya, Adriana Ximena Rivas Hernandez, Sharon Nicole UES ID: CZ RH UNIVERSITY CITY, ON THE 15TH DAY OF MARCH 2023.
Date: WEDNESDAY MARCH 15, 2023. Topic:THE CONFLICT BETWEEN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE The war in Ukraine is a disaster with numerous consequences at the international level that is very likely to get worse. This conflict began 8 years ago with the annexation of Crimea by Russia, but in February 2022 this great escalation of the conflict began again. Ukraine has an important role in the international system, considering that it has a very strategic geopolitical point for Russia, currently the country is again in a multidimensional struggle between great powers that can define relations between States around the world. Starting with the fact that Russia has many ties, whether economic or cultural, with Ukraine, since Kiev, the Capital of Ukraine, is considered by many to be "The mother of Russian cities" in terms of cultural influence, which is why it is a fundamental part of Russian identity. On the other hand, the influence that Russia wants to continue having along with the power of being a world power, is a determining factor in this war because the fact of losing control permanently over Ukraine can be seen as a great blow to the Russia's international prestige is here where the elements of power that are a mixture of many strategic ways of establishing either long or short term power can be evidenced, in this case Russia during these 8 years in the long term has managed to establish this power through its territory, its political culture and its patriotism, which is precisely one of the reasons for the invasion of Ukraine because it always wants to maintain that political influence in that country. With regard to trade, there is an important factor, because for many years Ukraine's largest trading partner was Russia, until China surpassed it and became Ukraine's largest trading partner. For its part, before the invasion, Russia refused to allow NATO to expand the alliance and in the same way they will seek its consent to make these uses, because Ukraine began to improve its ties with NATO despite not being an official Member, becoming in one of the six enhanced opportunity partners, a status given only to the bloc's closest non-member Allies, hoping at some point to obtain the opportunity for official NATO membership, NATO's response to the request for Russia was that they were not willing to close the doors to new members. In another aspect, in the short term, the power with the military influence that Russia imposes in Ukraine is evident, targeting the civil infrastructure in several cities, missile attacks leaving a hundred thousand dead or injured with millions of refugees who fled the chaos in Ukraine. Undoubtedly, this is a gigantic conflict in which there are no opportunities for an agreement or diplomacy, and which in the end is affecting not only politics but also the population, with fewer opportunities and very few solutions.
