DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
[CSC-307] PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES
SEMESTER 7 B(SPRING 2021)
EHTESHAM LATIF (02-134181-118)
REG No. : 46258
BAHRIA UNIVERSITY, KARACHI CAMPUS
ASSIGNMENT 03
Marks: 05
Read the following passage and answer the questions accordingly:
The Computer Misuse Act 1990 was intended to deal with perceived weaknesses in the criminal law
in relation to computer fraud and misuse. Particular issues concerned unauthorized access to
computer material, unauthorized modification of computer programs and data and, in terms of
computer fraud, the problem that it did not appear possible at law to deceive a machine and doubts
about the applicability of the law of attempts to computer fraud. Since the 1990 Act came into force,
there have been relatively few prosecutions under the Act but new forms of abuse have appeared
such as the use of spyware and the activity of ‘phishing’. Online fraud is now a major worry with
fraudsters obtaining personal details with which to carry out their acts of fraud. Apart from the
problem with deception, there were other defects in the fraud offences in the Theft Acts 1968 and
1978 and it was decided to replace these with a new Fraud Act. Further legislative changes to the
Computer Misuse Act 1990 are in the pipeline. These will strengthen the Act and insert in new
offences in relation to making, supplying or obtaining articles to be used to carry out the offences of
unauthorized access and modification.

ANS: As we know copying someone else work or using someone’s work is ethically wrong because copying anything is not healthy and there are some rules against it established by the governments so it’s not only ethically or morally wrong it’s also illegal. These rules goes by the name of copyrights which gives the owner exclusive rights. Copyright infringement occurs when somebody copies or distributes a copyrighted work without permission. Copyright violators can be sued in civil court for lost sales and other financial penalties. Using computer equipment to copy music and movies and disseminate them on the internet without the consent of the copyright holder. This is a common misuse of computers and the internet that violates copyright laws. So in films everyone engaged in the production and marketing of a film or song benefits financially from the product's sale. As a result, copyright law protects that product, preventing it from being copied, reproduced, or resold without their consent. It is illegal to download a song, movie, or other media file that has a copyright if you did not pay for it. Similarly, distributing is also prohibited a copyrighted media file without the express consent of the copyright owners, whether by electronic or non-electronic means. It's the act of an imposter taking over your life in a different place.  Identity theft also occurs when someone, such as a spouse, family member, or intimate partner, uses your personal information to open an account in your name without your permission.

  1. DATA MISUSE AND UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER OR COPYING. ANS: Using Internet computers and huge storage devices such as hard discs, memory sticks, and DVDs, copying and unlawful data transmission is rapid and easy. Without the authorization of the copyright owners, personal data, company research, and written work, such as novels and textbooks, cannot be duplicated. There are some modes of data theft:  These are the easiest and cheapest options according to these perpetrators and are very easy to hide. The memory cards are now coming in 512GB and 1 TB variants, so it has become even more comfortable to move a large amount of data in a small package. There is a considerable amount of rising in source code theft cases, wherein employees are copying the code and starting their own company or selling the system to a competitor company for a handsome amount.  Portable hard drives can also be used to store large data so it also can be used to steal data due to its capacity.  Remote access can be used for unlawful access (hacking) or authorized access (working from home). This makes it harder for law enforcement authorities or private investigators to trace the data.  To date, we've seen more than enough incidents where well-known cloud services have been easily hacked. The stolen information is either held hostage or sold on the dark web. Despite the fact that adequate precautions are taken to ensure that illicit hacking operations are prevented. Unfortunately, today's hackers are not two steps ahead of us, but ten.  Some criminals do not leave any electronic proof behind; instead, they grab printouts of important papers and steal hard copies of them.
