HEATHERS Character Descriptions ● Veronica Sawyer: a 17 year old student of Westerburg High who begins to question the school’s dark and cruel social hierarchy. Fiercely innocent and bold, who can be blind to the hard truth formulating around her. High belter with wide vocal and stylist range (F#3-A5). ● J.D.: a strange, charismatic, dark, violent and intriguing new student to Westerburg High, who challenges the school’s strong, social hierarchy and catches the attention of beautiful, Veronica Sawyer. He is dealing with deep issues about his past and his mental health. Strong, robust voice - tenor with belt to A4. ● Heather Chandler: Richest, hottest, most magnetic, cruelest girl in town, and ‘Ultimate Queen Bee’ of the Heathers. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel – no fear, no patience, no mercy. Belt/full voice to F5 or higher (middle part in trio). ● Heather MacNamara: Beautiful, innocent, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Deals with issues of anxiety to which she hides from the world and her friends. Belt/full voice to F5 or higher (top part in trio) *could switch parts with Duke if needed. ● Heather Duke: Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers, and longs to be in charge. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer unapologetically and boldly. Belt/full voice to D5 or higher (bottom part in trio) *could switch parts with MacNamara if needed. ● Martha Dunnstock: Veronica’s oldest and truest friend. Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck” by the cruel and popular crowd, the opposite of their version ‘hot’. A huge, good hearted, and beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Strong belt to E5 with wide vocal expression (G3-F5) ● Ram Sweeney: head jock, best friend of Kurt Kelly, who he shares questionable morals with. Baritone/Tenor with belt to G4 and good falsetto. ● Kurt Kelly: Quarterback and Captain. Big, rude, entitled, and cocky. Masks his insecurities with the mistreatment of others. He believes he is the brains in the friendship with Ram. Tenor with belt to A and good falsetto ● Ram’s Dad: father to Ram Sweeney; Former football player turned suburban Dad, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Baritone/Tenor, country/gospel belt to A4 or higher ● Kurt’s Dad: Straight-laced, very conservative, and former football player. Baritone/Tenor, country/gospel belt to G4 or higher ● Ms. Flemming: An aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Soprano belt to F5 with great style (G3-F5, opt. Bb5) ● Chorus women: Various vocal ranges, belting encouraged, general ranges are alto (F#3-F#5), soprano (Bb3-Bb5) 4 Women - 6 Women ● Chorus men: Various vocal ranges, belting encouraged, general ranges are bass (F2-Eb4), baritone (G2-G4), tenor (D3-Bb4) 4 Women - 6 Women
