AUDITION PACKET
The Alumni Production defines an Ashland alumnus as anyone 19+ who has previously
participated in an Ashland production in any capacity. When possible, we give

HEATHERS Character Descriptions ● Veronica Sawyer: a 17 year old student of Westerburg High who begins to question the school’s dark and cruel social hierarchy. Fiercely innocent and bold, who can be blind to the hard truth formulating around her. High belter with wide vocal and stylist range (F#3-A5). ● J.D.: a strange, charismatic, dark, violent and intriguing new student to Westerburg High, who challenges the school’s strong, social hierarchy and catches the attention of beautiful, Veronica Sawyer. He is dealing with deep issues about his past and his mental health. Strong, robust voice - tenor with belt to A4. ● Heather Chandler: Richest, hottest, most magnetic, cruelest girl in town, and ‘Ultimate Queen Bee’ of the Heathers. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel – no fear, no patience, no mercy. Belt/full voice to F5 or higher (middle part in trio). ● Heather MacNamara: Beautiful, innocent, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Deals with issues of anxiety to which she hides from the world and her friends. Belt/full voice to F5 or higher (top part in trio) *could switch parts with Duke if needed. ● Heather Duke: Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers, and longs to be in charge. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer unapologetically and boldly. Belt/full voice to D5 or higher (bottom part in trio) *could switch parts with MacNamara if needed. ● Martha Dunnstock: Veronica’s oldest and truest friend. Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck” by the cruel and popular crowd, the opposite of their version ‘hot’. A huge, good hearted, and beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Strong belt to E5 with wide vocal expression (G3-F5) ● Ram Sweeney: head jock, best friend of Kurt Kelly, who he shares questionable morals with. Baritone/Tenor with belt to G4 and good falsetto. ● Kurt Kelly: Quarterback and Captain. Big, rude, entitled, and cocky. Masks his insecurities with the mistreatment of others. He believes he is the brains in the friendship with Ram. Tenor with belt to A and good falsetto ● Ram’s Dad: father to Ram Sweeney; Former football player turned suburban Dad, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Baritone/Tenor, country/gospel belt to A4 or higher ● Kurt’s Dad: Straight-laced, very conservative, and former football player. Baritone/Tenor, country/gospel belt to G4 or higher ● Ms. Flemming: An aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Soprano belt to F5 with great style (G3-F5, opt. Bb5) ● Chorus women: Various vocal ranges, belting encouraged, general ranges are alto (F#3-F#5), soprano (Bb3-Bb5) 4 Women - 6 Women ● Chorus men: Various vocal ranges, belting encouraged, general ranges are bass (F2-Eb4), baritone (G2-G4), tenor (D3-Bb4) 4 Women - 6 Women

Possible dark comedy suggestions would be: Assassins, Dog Sees God, Laughing Wild, Baby with the Bathwater, Mr. Burns: A Post Electric Play. ● Below is a list of monologue options from Heathers Musical and Movie. These options may be performed in their entirety, or cuttings are also accepted. Female Option 1
You don’t get to be a nobody. Come Monday, You’re an ex-somebody. Not even the losers are gonna
touch you now. You can transfer to Washington and you can transfer to Jefferson, but no one at
Westerberg is gonna let you play their reindeer games. I’m like oxygen: I’m everywhere. Really,
Veronica? Sleeping with psycho trench coat kid? I will crucify you for this. Everyone in school is gonna
know that “good little Veronica Sawyer” is nothing but a dirty whore.
(VERONICA pukes on HEATHER CHANDLER’s shoes)
AAAAAAAAAAHHH! I raised you up from nothing! And this is my thanks? I get paid in puke????? I
know who I’m eating lunch with on Monday. Do you? (To all) Okay, party people! Where is the
goddam keg?
Female Option 2
Our children are dying! I hate to pull out my counter culture bonafides, here. But what this school needs
is a good old fashion rap session. Now I suggest that we gather everyone into the cafeteria and just talk
and feel together!
(Pause)
Go ahead, laugh at the hippy, but I am telling you we all misjudged Heather Chandler. This is the
lovelies suicide that I've ever read.
Male Option 1
What is that I smell in the air? Tolerance? Inclusion? Love? You know, how often can you say it’s a
good day to live Westerberg, Ohio? You’re welcome, town. Your love keeps me humble. So who’s next,
Heather Duke? She started that threeway rumor. I’ve taken the liberty of underlining meaningful
passages in her copy of Moby Dick, if you know what I mean. (beat)
Look, any war has casualties. It doesn’t mean it’s not worth fighting! But what? You’d rather go to jail
and give a free pass to the thugs who hurt people, evil pricks who make this world so unbearable you
can’t stand to go on living? (pause) You really wanna know how my mom died? My dad said it was an
accident but she knew what she was doing. She walked into that building 2 minutes before dad blew it
up. She waved at me out the window and then KABOOM... She left me.
The pain gives me clarity. We have a lot of work to do. Making this world a decent place for people who
are decent.
It ends WHEN EVERY ASSHOLE IS DEAD.
Male Option 2 JD’S DAD: “Hey dad, how was work today?” It was miserable. Some damn tribe of withered old bitches is trying to stop me from blowing up this fleabag hotel all because Glenn Miller and his band once took a dump there. Just like Kansas. Do you remember Kansas? Save the Memorial Oak Society. Showed those tree humpers 30 bricks of C4 explosives strapped to the trunk! Arraigned but acquitted. Goddamn Kansas. (He notices VERONICA) “Gee, pop!
