The Senior Secondary Education Curriculum (SSEC) was developed to further consolidate the educational gains of the 9- Year Basic Education Curriculum as well as ensure the actualisation of Govenments Transformation Agenda and other national developmental aspirations. The prime objective of senior secondary education is to ensure that every Senior Secondary School (SSS) graduate is well prepared for higher education as well as acquired relevant functional trade/entrepreneurship skills. Thus, the curricula focus is on value re-orientation job creation, wealth generation and poverty eradication. To guarantee good understanding of concepts, the new SSS curricula are thematically organized, from simple to complex, real to abstract. Implementation of the curriculum commenced in September, 2011 with the first set of Basic Education Graduates.
The Philosophy of the new SSEC is that on completion of the 3 years of senior secondary education, every graduate/recipient should have been well prepared for higher education as well as acquired relevant functional trade/entrepreneurship skills needed for poverty eradication, job creation and wealth generation; and in the process strengthened further the foundation for ethical, moral and civic values acquired at the Basic Education Level.
Four Specialized Fields of Study: Senior Secondary Education (Science) Senior Secondary Education (Humanities) Senior Secondary Education (Technology) Senior Secondary Education (Business)
Compulsory (cross cutting) core subjects namely: English Studies General Mathematics One Trade/entrepreneurship subject Civic Education

Electives ensure broad-based education while at the same time achieve reduction in students workload.
The implementation of the new SSEC commenced since September, 2011 beginning with the SS1 curriculum component. The first set of SS student graduate will be examined in June, 2014. The criterion for selection of subjects for public examination is as follows: โ Every student is to offer the 4 compulsory core subjects โ Each student may then choose two (2), three (3), four (4), or five (5) subjects from each of their preferred Four Fields of Studies depending on their potential, interest and capability such that the minimum number of subjects is eight (8) while the maximum number of subjects is nine (9). โ If students select two (2) subjects from a Field of Study, they can select two (2) or three (3) subjects from any other Fields of Studies as the case may be or from Trade/Entrepreneurship subjects to make a minimum of eight (8) or a maximum of nine (9) subjects. โ If students select three (3) subjects from a Field of Study, they can select one (1) or two (2) subjects from any other Field of Study or from Trade/Entrepreneurship subjects to make a minimum of eight (8) or a maximum of nine (9) subjects. โ If students select four (4) subjects from a Field of Study, they can select one (1) more subject from any other Fields of Study or from Trade/Entrepreneurship subjects to make a maximum of nine (9) subjects. โ If students select five (5) subjects from a Field of Study, they have already selected a maximum of nine (9) subjects.
