Introduction Tasks such as business correspondence, sales projections, graphic design, and data processing used to require trained specialists.

All these tasks, and many more, can be accomplished using microcomputers and application software.

Competent end users in today’s word need to understand the capabilities of basic application software including word processors, spreadsheets, database management systems, and presentation programs.

ASP

An Application Service Provider (ASP) is a business that offers software services to customers, using computer networks and the Internet as the mechanism to deliver and manage the service

The goal of an ASP business is to reduce the cost of software distribution and maintenance. Using a client/server model (often Web-based), network software can be installed in a centrally-controlled place and hosted - accessed by the customers over remote links. This method to providing software solutions is sometimes called the software as a service (SaaS) approach.

Features of an Application Service Provider

The service provider operates and owns the software or application, the hardware (e.g. servers) and the support personnel.

The application is made available to customers through the Internet or a “thin client” (a computer which depends on another computer to handle the majority of its functions, rather than doing data processing itself).

The customer is billed by the service provider on a fixed, time-bound schedule (usually on a monthly basis) or on a per-use format

Problems

A successful ASP must have robust technology

for:

network security - protecting the business data flowing through the network network monitoring and troubleshooting - ensuring the hosted applications remaining running. Often, ASPs will be under contract to meet network uptime and performance goals.

Example

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is an example of an Application Service Provider. Any individual or company can conceivably have direct access to the Internet if the said person or entity has the financial, manpower and technological resources to do so. Since this is not the usual case, businesses need an outside provider of these resources.

An ISP provides an important function. It handles everything necessary for Internet access – hardware, software, support technicians, etc. – and offers the service to companies and individuals who pay for the service. (^) CE06_PP03-16 Docsity.com
