Epitome of Beauty A woman with immensely noticeable fair and glowing skin, a slim and proportional figure, and on top of that, she must attractively possess the beauty adapted from the foreign standards; this is the concept of the Filipino people regarding “a beautiful woman”. Physical attributes surpassed the other factors in calling a woman beautiful such as intellectual ability and personality. One can’t deny the influence of the foreign standards, such as Western and Korean, in their idea of beautiful. The traditional beauties that every Filipino woman has are no longer considered as beautiful. Rather, sun- kissed skin is no longer attractive, flat nose opened a way to degrade, weight is now an issue, and so on and so forth. It almost seems like everyone is trying to be someone else rather than expressing themselves uniquely. To strengthen the statement, try watching any Filipino comedy-themed movies wherein any difference in physical traits will be a source of laughter. These movies, although made others laugh, became one of the major reasons for Filipino people’s change of beauty standards.
On the contrary, a beautiful woman should be every woman. If a woman is afraid of being her true self, she is still beautiful. If a woman’s attributes fail to pass the society’s beauty standards, she is still beautiful. If a woman is confident of herself despite the criticisms, she is still beautiful. If a woman is lacking, she is still beautiful. If a woman is already considered as beautiful, then others should not, in all forms, try to let her down. People will inevitably set their own standards; choose the standard you’ll try to meet without feeling any negativity.
In conclusion, standards exist in almost every aspect of everyone’s lives. It could be used to improve oneself, especially in physical matters, to feel proud of herself. However, it shouldn’t exceed to the point wherein an individual would completely change herself to fit in. Everyone should keep in mind that standards are just concepts made by the human mind; it’s a matter of choice if they’ll turn it into reality. Rather than thinking of how you’ll meet those beauty standards, start putting in your mind that you are beautiful. We can’t see the ugly spots you are trying to hide, maybe because the “flaw” doesn’t even exist.
