Bluetooth Profiles: A Comprehensive Overview of Bluetooth Application and System Profiles, Study Guides, Projects, Research of Network Programming

An in-depth look into the various bluetooth profiles, their functions, and how they contribute to ensuring interoperability between bluetooth devices. With nine application profiles and four system profiles, this guide covers essential profiles such as the generic access profile, service discovery application profile, serial port profile, intercom profile, headset profile, cordless telephony profile, object push profile, dial up networking profile, file transfer profile, fax profile, lan access profile, and synchronization profile.

Chapter 4: Bluetooth Profiles
These are the standards defined by Bluetooth SIG with each profile implementing
only a set of stack protocols. These profiles aim to ensure interoperability between
Bluetooth devices. Also, by choosing some of these profiles for a device, the
production cost can be reduced.
There are nine application profiles and four system profiles. The system profiles
share some functionality with some of the application profiles.

A. Generic Access Profile
This system profile is the core of all other profiles, since it is responsible for device
discovery and link maintenance.
B. Service Discovery Application Profile
This is another system profile that helps the Bluetooth device to discover other
devices and applications supported by them, in the user vicinity by using the Service
Discovery Protocol (SDP).

A. Generic Access Profile

This system profile is the core of all other profiles, since it is responsible for device discovery and link maintenance.

B. Service Discovery Application Profile

This is another system profile that helps the Bluetooth device to discover other devices and applications supported by them, in the user vicinity by using the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP).

C. Serial Port Profile

This system profile enables two Bluetooth devices to have a serial link, as if they are connected through a serial (RS-232 or USB) cable.

D. Generic Object Exchange Profile

This system profile is responsible for object exchange between Bluetooth devices.

E. Intercom Profile

Also referred to as Audio Gateway Profile, uses the microphone and speaker of two Bluetooth devices for direct voice communication. It is an application profiles.

F. Headset Profile

This application profile enables connection between Bluetooth enabled device (such as a laptop or mobile) and Bluetooth enabled headsets, using serial port profile.

G. Cordless Telephony Profile

This application profile facilitates a Bluetooth enabled phone to be used as a cordless, mobile phone or an intercom.

H. Object Push Profile

The ‘pushed’ data such as an advertisement or business card is managed by this application profile.

I. Dial up Networking Profile

This application profile also uses serial port profile, to provide dial up connection between public networks and Bluetooth enabled devices.

J. File Transfer Profile

The basic file operations are performed by this application profile. These operations include, downloading, uploading, and browsing etc however the access can be restricted by the host.

K. Fax Profile

This application profile uses serial port profile to enable computers to send fax using a Bluetooth device, such as a cellular phone as a gateway.
