C228 Task One Sentinel City Simulation Task One: Sentinel City Simulation Name: Western Governors University

Acer Tech Center has a population of 168,390(Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). This is the 2nd^ largest neighborhood in Sentinel City. $166,300 is the median household income. Acer Tech Center has 1.5% of its population un-insured (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). This community features Sentinel City Hospital, Sentinel City Hall, a restaurant named “Lilly’s” and local radio station BUZZ 96.5 FM. Casper Park District has the largest amount of residents at 352,643(Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). The median household income is $80,134. Casper Park District has 22.7% of its population without health insurance. Casper Park offers ABC Day Care. It also contains the affordable housing projects. Industrial heights is the least populated neighborhood of the four. The population is 38,855 people (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017).. Industrial heights is the poorest of the four communities with the median household income falling at $24,672. This community has the highest rate of un-insured persons at 37.5% (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). Industrial Heights has a church that also runs a soup kitchen. This community has the department of transportation, the Sentinel City School District and the health clinic. Demographically, the aforementioned neighborhoods are predominately Caucasian. Notably, the second highest populations of residents are Hispanic. Assessment of Needs and Risks Nightingale Square has the highest median income out of the 4 neighborhoods at $269,550. Acer Tech center ranks 2nd^ in highest median income at $166,300. Casper Park District has the median income of $80,134. Industrial Heights has the lowest median income of the 4 neighborhoods with only $24,672 (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). There is a direct correlation

between average household income and percentage of un-insured people. Nightingale Square has the highest median income and the lowest amount of uninsured persons at 0.7% (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). Industrial heights has the lowest median income and the highest rate of uninsured residents at 37.5% (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). This city reports the higher the median income, the lower percentage of population to be not insured. Neighborhood/Community Safety Inventory Spending time exploring this community, several hazards to health were discovered. No neighborhood was pristine and perfectly safe though one neighborhood had more incidents than others. Nightingale Square appeared to be one of the safest neighborhoods. It appeared to have the least amount of graffiti, smaller areas of trash accumulating outdoors, and the least amount of wild, stray animals. Industrial heights was viewed to be the neighborhood in the most distress. It appeared to be the most industrial area out of the four neighborhoods and it had the most neighborhood noise. It appeared to have an area where pipes were broken and seemed to be leaking biohazard liquids. No city officials attempting to clean or contain the spill were noted. The structure of the buildings appeared to be decrepit and worn. They were littered with graffiti and some appeared to be abandoned with windows or doors covered in boards. There was very little up-keep. Upon seeing the soup kitchen, it looks as if there were multiple people waiting in a long line to be served. Surrounding the buildings, there were multiple trash bins set on fire, along with a car erupting in flames. This could be indicative of a homeless population camping in this particular area. Throughout Sentinel City, there were numerous stray dogs and cats running around. In addition, multiple rats were seen in many areas of the city. Sentinel City offers many public service offices. This is made up to include animal services, fire department, police department and emergency ambulance services with

Windshield Survey During my entire duration of traveling through Sentinel City, there were notable differences between the 4 neighborhoods. Nightingale Square felt the safest, cleanest and newest of the vicinities. It was the most aesthetically appealing. It gave the impression that it was the most affluent of the 4 neighborhoods toured. The structures looked to be new and contemporary. They were tall buildings that appeared to be condos for families. Only one instance of graffiti and street trash were observed. The streets and sidewalks were clean which gave the impression that the city well maintained the public areas. There were vibrant, well-groomed parks and tree lined areas for families. There were minimal stray animals observed in this area. Within Nightingale Square, you can see citizens gathering to play sports. This area also hosted the large grocery store “Joe’s Grocery” along with small convenience stores to offer a variety of nourishment and fresh foods. This community featured coffee shops, local restaurants, a local gym and a senior living center. The community appeared to be predominantly Caucasian. Most individuals had personal vehicles, while some chose to walk or jog on the sidewalks. Between Nightingale Square and Arch Tech Center there were railways. Arch Tech Center looked as if it was the “middle class” neighborhood. The buildings were newish but had a few more instances of graffiti and unkempt outdoor trash piles. The outdoor spaces appeared mostly clean. There were shrubs and trees, though less than Nightingale Square. People traveled by foot or bikes\some using cars and a handful choosing to use public transportation. Arch Tech Center offers a farmer’s market to provide the community with fresh produce. People gathered here. People also gathered outside City Hall for peaceful protesting. Again, the population was predominantly white, with some visibly minorities. There were a handful of specialty restaurants, showcasing Mexican and Italian fares. There are signs

warning against texting and driving. Again, a railway separates Arch Tech Center from Casper Park. Casper Park appeared to be a socioeconomic class below Arch Tech Center. While Casper Park had a park, it was not well kept. The vegetation was overgrown and not maintained. There were significantly less tree’s lining the streetways. Casper Park had very little green spaces. Barrels were observed to be on fire. Significant increase of stray animals witnessed. A handful of buildings in Casper Park were seemingly abandoned, and more often than not, had graffiti tags on them. The streets were not regularly maintained as evidence by trash and debris in the streets and thoroughfares. People gathered in small groups, conversing on benches. The community was more diverse. In addition to Caucasians, there were people of Middle Eastern origin and Hispanics. This neighborhood offered multiple Cash Checking locations. The neighborhood offers a senior living facility, ABC daycare and the affordable housing project. The only nearby options for fresh produce was a small wagon on the side of the street. There is a police presence in this community. There were signs promoting vaccinations and help for addictions. Industrial Heights appeared to be the most decrepit of the four communities. The buildings and structures appeared old, outdated, and made of simple materials. Majority of structures were defaced by graffiti and a few were clearly abandoned. Many windows were broken, missing, or had been boarded up. Garbage and trash littered the streets and back alleys. Due to this, there was a significant amount of stray dogs, stray cats and rats running rampant. This community had visible crime. There was police tape and activity outside a building. I saw no true grocery stores in this borough, only small bodegas and convenience stores, akin to gas stations. The church in the community offers a soup kitchen for the underprivileged and

2017). There are multiple living options for the elderly. Sentinel City boasts a 3400+ bed senior living center, 36 beds for long term care, 64 beds for skilled nursing, 248 occupancy assisted living center, 2874 beds within nursing homes and 1048 independent senior apartments (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). The city also has 2 Community Health Centers. In Acer Tech Center, there is a city hospital that offers emergency care, inpatient hospital services, dental care, vision facilities and even a pharmacy. The location is slightly more central for the entire community. The better health clinic is located in Industrial Heights. This provides contraceptive services, pregnancy testing and counseling, STD testing and services and cancer screenings. It appears this clinic is operating in the least wealthy location in sentinel city, offering help to the less fortunate and most needy. Compared to previous years, abortion rates have decreased but pregnancy rates have increased in the teen population of 15-17 (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). The affordable housing project offers studios, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom floorplans. The average income for a tenant in a studio apartment is $33,000, 1 bedroom $28,000 and 2 bedroom $17000 respectively. The families that live in this establishment have lots of complaints. 21% of the people complain of factory smoke. 18% of people complain of dogs barking, 17% loud noises, 10% too high of rent, and 13% of patrons loitering on the property (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). In addition to the affordable housing project, there are a handful of other social services available in the city. Adult and children services aides in the head start program, assisting adoptions and child care. WIC is also available. This program primarily aide’s infants and children. Supplemental Nutritional Assistance program provides healthy nutrition to primarily low income families. Approximately 24,359 citizens are receiving this assistance. (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017).

B1: Analysis of Collected Data Sentinel City presents several areas of alarm. The first health problem I viewed was the availability of healthy meals. Every neighborhood had at least 1 donut shop, with some neighborhoods hosting multiple donut shops. 2 of the 4 neighborhoods did not have a store that offered fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh meats. Individuals living in Industrial Heights and Casper Park basically had only convenience stores and bodegas to purchase food from. Convenience stores notoriously sell junk food, sugary snacks, canned meals and overly processed finger foods. All of these can contribute to obesity and malnutrition. Industrial Heights has a soup kitchen that provides 40,000+ meals to low income citizens every single month. Low income residents may be eligible for food assistance programs, but may not have nearby locations to utilize said programs efficiently. This ultimately is categorized into nutrition and weight status. Pollution and waste management also is clearly an issue within Sentinel City. Some streets, parks and alleys were riddled with trash and industrial waste. Air pollution was noted due to the wafting smoke pouring out of the industrial smoke stacks. Car fires can also add to air pollution. Air pollution levels can be directly related to asthma, lung cancers, bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. 21% of all emergency room visits were due to respiratory conditions such as cough last year (Sentinel City Simulation, 2017). This problem is categorized into environmental health. There is a notable absence of safe, clean green spaces for most people living in Sentinel City. Lack of green space can contribute to a few problems. There are fewer places for people to gather and exercise outdoors. Lack of exercise can lead to obesity and many health complications and diseases. This topic is categorized into physical activity.

affected by the availability of sidewalks, bike lanes, parks and trails. There is a noticeable absence of those in Casper Park and Industrial Heights. Lack of appropriate amounts of physical activity can directly lead to obesity, stroke, hypertension, depression and coronary heart disease. (Physical Activity, 2018). Sentinel City can easily change things to help provide people with the means to increase physical activity. The parks can be cleaned and groomed, removing litter and offering more green areas for activity. The city is building a second affordable housing project, even though the first is still half vacant. Instead of making this building completely filled with apartments, the city could easily add a gymnasium or community swimming pool for the underprivileged people to utilize for their health. Bike lanes can easily be painted into streets which provide safe, clean areas for people to ride bicycles. The sidewalks can be de-littered of trash providing people a place to walk. Finally, the last notable problem falls under the topic f environment health. This is the least changeable topic as people rarely have control over environmental hazards such as air pollution, noise pollution and elimination maintenance. Healthy People 2020 focus on 6 environmental health themes, including “outdoor air quality, surface and ground water quality, toxic substances and hazardous wastes, home and communities, infrastructure and surveillance, and global environmental health.” (Environmental Health, 2018). The citizens of Industrial Heights and Casper Park complain of air pollution and noise pollution. Poor air quality is directly linked to long term damage to respiratory and cardiovascular systems, cancer and premature death (Environmental Health, 2018). There is unregulated air pollution being sent into the environment from smoke stacks in Industrial Heights. Between Industrial Heights and Casper Park, there are broken pipes spewing hazardous liquids into street. The effects of these liquids and fumes are unknown. Every neighborhood had some degree of trash inappropriately disposed

of. There is a lack of management regarding trash and waste. The streets of the lower socioeconomic neighborhoods are riddled with the most trash and debris. The older buildings in these neighborhoods could be exposed to lead paint and other fire hazards. As previously stated, most people aren’t able to change the surrounding environment in which they live. People are able to make small but important changes. Older buildings can switch from lead paint to acrylic or latex paint to reduce toxicity. People who smoke can either choose to stop smoking, which is ideal. They can also choose to smoke outside. This has a direct impact on air quality and reduces carcinogens being inhaled by second parties. Citizens can choose to keep their properties clean and tidy. Reducing the amount of trash inside and outside also reduces the probability to vermin inhabiting the area. Sentinel City can also choose to allocate more budget for waste management. This could allow for more garbage to be removed in a timely manner. C2: Community Resources Available to Address Health Related Problem/Concern In relation to environmental health, the city could allocate more of the budget to waste management. This can allow for more employees, vehicles and time designated to pick up garbage and dispose of it properly. The community can offer smoking cessation classes to reduce smoking and second hand smoke. Community resources that are available to help with physical activity already exist. Such as adult sport leagues, swim lessons etc. These resources could expand to multiple neighborhoods making them more readily available to the community. The community could also designate a day for the citizens to unite and help clean up public parks and sidewalks. This would beautify the current parks and open new clean, safe areas for people to do outdoor activities. Finally, in regards to nutrition, the city already has a few programs in place. Currently, the offer WIC and SNAP. WIC is targeted to pregnant women, infants and children.

to find alternatives to the apparent solutions. For example, to increase physical activity, citizens do not need a million dollar exercise complex in their community. Provide people with clean and safe outdoor space and they will utilize it to the best of their ability. References About Healthy People. (2018, February 23).
