A. Action Assessment: See attached file B. Needs Assessment: Demographics Assessment The population of Sentinel City is 663,862. The age percentage breakdown of the population of Sentinel City is 7.4% for less than 5 years, 21.7% for 5 to 18 years, 60.4% for 18 to 65 years of age and 10.5% for over the age of 65. The rage percentage breakdown of the population of Sentinel City is 80.6% White, 10.4% Black, 2% Native American, 3/7% Asian, 0.2% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 31.5% Hispanic and 3.1% with two or more races. The median household income of Sentinel City is $49,091 and 18.9% of the residents live below the poverty level. The Nightingale Square area has a population of 103,974 with a median income of 269,550 and 0.7% of the residents are non-insured. The Acer Tech Center has a population of 168,390 with a median income of 166,300 and 1.5% of the residents are non-insured. Casper Park District has a population of 352,643 with a median income of 80,134 and 22.7% of the residents are non- insured. Industrial Heights has a population of 3,855 with a median income of 24,672 and 37.5% of the residents are non-insured. Neighborhood Community Safety Inventory Safety hazards that I saw in Sentinel City were that a lot of buildings had graffiti throughout all the areas. Industrial Heights had a soup kitchen with broken down vandalized cars, there was a lot of garbage in the alleys and beside buildings that attracted rats. There was garbage across from the school and church. I noticed a lot of abandoned buildings that homeless stay in and many other buildings that needed repairs.
buildings seemed to be mostly concrete and brick. There was a dental office, grocery store, convenience stores, laundromat, and parks and recreation where people were playing tennis and basketball. I saw a billboard that advertised being vaccinated. This is also where the senior living center was located and a large condo. Next, I went to Acer Tech Center where there were less trees along the streets and the building are closer together, made of concrete and brick. I started to notice garbage next to some of the buildings and protesters outside of City Hall as well as more graffiti. There was a museum, Lilly’s restaurant, the hospital, Acer condominiums and community center. I saw a billboard for quitting smoking. I saw Casper Park District next. There was park view apartments, affordable housing project, ABC daycare, a donut shop and sushi restaurant. There were very few trees along the streets and the building had no space between most of them, they were made of concrete and brick also. There was a lot more graffiti and abandoned buildings than in the previous areas and more garbage in front of buildings. I saw billboards to get vaccinated near the Casper senior living center. The last area in the city was Industrial Heights which was in the worst condition, the buildings were made of concrete and brick and seemed more run down. This is the area the school, church and health clinic are located, backstage apartments and a check cashing business. There was more police presence here. There was an Italian restaurant, soup kitchen with broken down vandalized cars nearby and a lot of garbage in the alleys and next to buildings as well as more graffiti. I noticed stray dogs in this area also. The school was in good condition with a nice playground and crossing guard and a lot of children were coming and going and playing. I noticed a billboard advertising to buy e-cigarettes.
There were people walking in all areas of the city but there were no indications of when you left an area and entered a different part of town. There seemed to be several bus stops which indicates that public transportation is used. There was a diverse ethnic population as well as several different races and it would be hard to tell the religion preferences of the communities. B1. Data Analysis: Interpretation of Data I noticed there was a large homeless population. The total homeless population was 5,775 with 3,917 most located in Industrial Heights, 1,593 in Casper Park District, 199 in Acer Tech and 66 in Nightingale Square. 64% of the meals served at the soup kitchen are served to homeless and 35% of the complaints at Parks and Recreation are concerning homeless. (Sentinel City, 2021.) 18.9% of the population lives below the poverty level and many of the population is also uninsured. Most of these individuals live in the Industrial Heights and Casper Park District which has the lowest incomes and is in worse condition than the other areas, there was a lot of garbage and stray dogs. (Sentinel City, 2021.) Sentinel City pharmacy filled a lot of medications for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. The largest number of deaths were from cardiovascular disease, heart disease and diabetes also. These may be indications that obesity could be a problem for the population since there was not a lot of options for recreational activities. (Sentinel City, 2021.) Nutrition seems to be a problem with 27% of the children in the school system get reduced or free lunch. There has been a significant increase in the price of groceries over the last 5 years. There are families in all areas that receive SNAP and WIC, and the soup kitchen serves meals to healthy adults, children, elderly, and veterans also. (Sentinel City, 2021.)
C2. Discussion of Community Resources I believe that parks and recreation could help provide resources for nutrition. They offer gardening classes and I believe if they had community gardens in different areas, they could provide fresh food. They could even sell some fruits and vegetables to the local restaurants and grocery stores at a discounted price to help fund the project as well. The church could help spread the word with the people that visit the soup kitchen, and they could also become involved and have a garden that would help with the food for the soup kitchen. If they allowed some of the food to be sold at a farmers’ market it could provide jobs for some of the homeless and fresh food also. C3. Primary Prevention Topic The primary prevention topic I chose was nutrition, physical activity, and obesity. The top medication prescribed in the last year are for high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, all of these medical conditions can be decreased by having proper nutrition and better physical activity. My goal would be to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables and provide more opportunities for physical activities. D. Application of Assessment Strategies/Tools between Simulation and My Community As I was using this simulation and the assessment tools provided, I was able to see information that I would not have thought to look for before this. I believe that I could complete a more accurate assessment of my own community now that would not have been complete before this assignment. I now have a better idea of where to go and what questions to ask to help make the changes that would be the most beneficial for my community.
