Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Absenteeism in school is the habit of staying away from school without providing a genuine or any reason for not attending classes. Absenteeism is a truant behaviour that negatively affects the performance of every students. This research paper will focus more about on the effects of absenteeism of FDLHS’s Grade 7 students. In this research, the researcher will tackle about the effects of absenteeism to the academic performance of the students. They will also tackle some of the probably causes of absenteeism. Some of the students didn’t know, what can be the effect of their absences in their studies so they think that it is fine to commit absences, which is wrong because attendance play an important role in the academic performance of every student. Basically absences have negative effects in the study of every student. The researchers are conducting this research to educate their fellow students about the bad effects that may happen to them when they continuously make their absences, encourage them to stay present because of the good benefits that may give to them by being perfect on attendance, and make them realize the importance of attendance to their studies. Many students suffers from a low grade mark because of being absent in classes. Because of absences students miss lots of classroom activities like quizzes, performance tasks, projects, assignments and more other activities. It is also hard for the student to
Background of the Study Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence without a good and proper reason. Traditionally, absenteeism has been viewed as an indicator of poor individual performance. Absence nowadays cannot be separated from the individuals like students. Absence has became necessity in the nature of students. So it is not surprising that this kind of behaviour still proceed to High School. Absenteeism has always been behaviour among the students of Froilan D. Lopez High School. There are too many reasons on why do other students prefer to be absent than to be present. The researchers know that having a habit of skipping of classes and not attending on it may give bad or negative impact to those who do it, so in this research the researcher aimed to educate their fellow students about the bad effects of absenteeism and the importance of attendance in their academic performance and curriculum. Statement of the Problem Some of the students, prefer to be absent than to be present because of lack of knowledge about the importance of attendance and negative effect of absenteeism. This study aims primarily to determine the Perceived impact of Absenteeism in FDLHS’s Grade 7 students. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
- What are the different reasons why the students prefer to be absent?
- What are the negative effects of absenteeism towards the study?
- How important attendance is in school curriculum?
- What can be the action plan that can do to lessen the absenteeism of the students? Significance of the Study This study about the negative effects of absenteeism of FLDHS’s Grade 7 students will give information to our fellow students about the bad impacts of absences and importance of attendance. The main goal of this study is to encourage every students to stay present and stay away from being absent for them to achieved much better grade marks. This study will benefit certain groups with relevance to this research, Groups concerned will be the following: Students. Through this study, the students will be aware of the negative effects of absenteeism and importance of attendance. Parents. Through this research, the parent can easily encourage their child/ children to stay present and stay away from being absent. Teachers. Through this research, the teachers can easily demonstrate the importance of attendance. They can also teach better without thinking about absent students. School Administrator. Through this research, the school administrator such as guidance councillor can easily handle the problem in absenteeism.
