Check Sheets
Are data gathering tools that can be used in
forming histograms; they can be either tabular or
schematic.
An example of a tabular checksheetfor the
Pareto chart discussed earlier is shown on the
next slide. This provides a chart for copier
operators to mark each time a delay occurs in
setting up new jobs.

Check Sheets as a Prerequisite to Histograms

  • Tally charts are used to create a simple frequency distribution of the data.
  • Descriptive presentation of data which help to identify patterns – can be used with attribute data (pass/fail) but more commonly used with measured data.
  • Histograms are then constructed from the Tally charts using around 10 intervals with convenient mid-points and interval width

Check Lists

  • Used as prompts and aids.
  • They highlight the key features of a process, equipment, system

and/or product/or service to which attention needs to be given,

to ensure that the procedures for an operation, housekeeping,

inspection, maintenance etc have been followed.

  • Basic Steps:
    • Study the activity for which the checklist is to be drawn up
    • Drawing on observations of the process, discussions with operatives and appropriate working instructions and procedures, construct the checklist
    • Walk the checklist through the process by following what happens at each stage
    • Ask the person who is carrying out the process to checklists accuracy
    • Display it next to the process
    • Assess its use in practice
