  1. What kind of material can be used for making handles of the cooking utensils? Ans. Material that can be used for making handles of the cooking utensils are wood or plastic which are poor conductors of heat.
  2. Write one advantage of classifying things in groups. Ans. one advantage of classifying things in groups is that it helps in systematic arrangement, making it easier to locate objects and study their properties.
  3. A few things have been grouped as follows. Identify the property common to all the things. Glass, Cup, Bucket, Mug, Jug.

Ans. All of these are containers or objects used for storing or holding liquids.

Short and Long Answer

  1. Why can't a tumbler made of cloth be used for storing water? Ans. A tumbler made of cloth cannot be used for storing water because it contains pores that allow water to seep through, meaning it cannot hold water without leaking.
  2. "All lustrous materials are not metals." Explain. Ans. While many metals are lustrous, other non-metallic materials like diamond or iodine crystals also exhibit luster. Therefore, shine alone doesn't make a material a metal.
  3. How can transparent water we made opaque? Ans. We can make water opaque by adding a substance that doesn't dissolve and blocks light, such as milk, ink, or mud.
  4. Can we use paper-like materials for making cooking utensils? Why or why not? Ans. No. Paper can catch fire when placed over a flame. It also lacks the strength to hold heavy food items.
  5. Describe an experiment to show that our palm is translucent. Ans. In a dark room, we will cover the top of a switched-on flashlight with our palm. We will see a faint red glow passing through our hand, showing that it allows some light to pass through but not clearly.
  6. Name the properties that are shown by all the materials. Ans. All materials possess mass and occupy space.
  7. Why are the handles of cooking utensils made from bakelite or wood? Ans. Wood and bakelite are poor conductors of heat. They prevent the heat from the hot utensil from traveling to our hands, allowing us to cook safely.
  8. How does sorting help a shopkeeper? Ans. Sorting helps a shopkeeper organize items by categories and brands. This makes it easier to locate specific goods quickly, and serve customers efficiently.
  9. You are provided with two substances A and B. Substance A sinks in water while B floats on it. What do you infer about their density? Ans. Objects that sink are denser than the liquid, while objects that float are less dense. Therefore, Substance A has a higher density than water, and Substance B has a lower density than water.
