St. Vincent College: General Physics II Exam IV - Problems and Solutions, Exams of Physics

The fourth exam for the general physics ii course at st. Vincent college. The exam consists of four problems related to electric and magnetic fields, current density, and the behavior of charged particles. Students are required to determine velocities, masses, radii of curvature, current densities, magnetic fields, and forces acting on charges.

  1. (25 pts)

a) (5 pts) In what direction, relative to the direction of a uniform magnetic field, must a charged particle be traveling in order to experience the largest possible magnetic force?

b) (5 pts) A uniform magnetic field points out the page. When observed from this point of view, a charged particle undergoes clock-wise circular motion while in this field. What is the sign of the charge on the particle?

c) (5 pts) In the Biot-Savart Law,

what is the direction of the unit vector

d) (5 pts) A single wire carrying current passes through a region of space. The integral portion of

Ampere’s Law,

is computed around a closed path that does not encircle the wire. The result of the integral is thus zero. Does this necessitate that the magnetic field is therefore zero?

e) (5 pts) Electric fields begin at negative charges and end at positive charges. Discuss the “beginning” and “ending” of magnetic field lines, including in which direction the magnetic field points.

  1. (25 pts) A long cable is fabricated as a thick hollow cylinder. The outer wall of the wire has radius 5 cm and the inner wall has radius 2 cm. Since the air inside the hollow center of the wire is an insulator, no current flows in this region. However, the rest of the wire carries a current of 100 A uniformly distributed throughout the wire.

a) (5 pts) Determine the current density in the cable.

b) (10 pts) Determine the magnetic field at a distance of 10 cm from the center of the wire.

c) (10 pts) Determine the magnetic field at a distance of 3 cm from the center of the wire.

  1. (25 pts)

a) (15 pts) A positive charge ! #"%$&('!)+*-, C moves with velocity /. 0"

m/s through a region in which both a uniform magnetic field and a uniform electric field exist. What is the total force (vector)

on the moving charge if.

: T and.

V/m?

b) (10 pts) Two long parallel wires are separated by a distance of 0.1 m. The force per unit length that

each wire exerts on the other is 3 $ 10 )<B N/m. The force is repulsive. If the current in one wire is 2 A

to the right, what is the current (and direction) in the other wire?
