Important:
Submit a digital copy (PDF only) on moodle and one printed copy of your work
through the class rep.
For the digital copy the file name should consist of your matric number only . I.e.
UJ_XXXX_NS_XXXXX e.g. UJ_1955_NS_00001
Include your full name (Surname first) AND Matric Number at the top of the first
page
You do not need to write an abstract
You will need to do some independent reading using the resources of the library and the
internet. You will need to draw on books (like those in the recommended reading list),
journals and conference proceedings (see IEEE-Explore in the library or online), and sources

Questions
Your topic is specified by the last digit of your Matric number odd, even, and zero digits.
Write a survey/review on your topic in the style of a technical paper which would be
publishable in a journal or presented at a conference/workshop.
Odd: Evolution of processor design (If your matric number ends with an odd number digit)
Since the inception of the electronic processors, tremendous advancements have been
noticed in the design of computer processors. This is largely due to the need for computer
systems to handle complex tasks. Choose any brand of processors and present a survey on
how this brand of processors has evolved to its present state. What are the factors that
have necessitated these evolutions and what technologies have made these advancements
possible?

Questions Your topic is specified by the last digit of your Matric number – odd, even, and zero digits.

Write a survey/review on your topic in the style of a technical paper which would be publishable in a journal or presented at a conference/workshop.

Odd: Evolution of processor design (If your matric number ends with an odd number digit) Since the inception of the electronic processors, tremendous advancements have been noticed in the design of computer processors. This is largely due to the need for computer systems to handle complex tasks. Choose any brand of processors and present a survey on how this brand of processors has evolved to its present state. What are the factors that have necessitated these evolutions and what technologies have made these advancements possible?

Even: Memory design (If your matric number ends with an even number digit)

Modern computer systems are using increasingly larger sized internal memory. This has enabled such computer systems to improve on the usage of their processing power. Write a survey paper on how internal memories have improved over the past 20 years. What technologies have made these improvements possible? What are the future projections for internal memories?

Zero: Processor vs memory (If your matric number ends with a zero - 0 ) Processors have witnessed tremendous increase in processing speed in recent times. However memory speeds have not been able to match the processor speeds. This has necessitated the industry to find ways of bridging this gap. Write a survey paper on the various software and hardware approaches that are being used to match the gap between processor speed and memory speed. Are these approaches adequate?

Marking Breakdown Essays will be marked on the basis of:  Relevant discussion of the topic, showing the depth and breadth of your research,  Critical reasoning, showing you understand what you have read, and have thought about what it means, rather than just repeating or paraphrasing someone else’s work  Clarity and structure of writing, be concise and make sure everything is presented in a logical order  Writing style, make it look and sound like a journal paper or a technical report Marks will be allocated between content (what it is that you say) and presentation (how it is that you say it) and references (who said what).

Mark scheme 80 - 100
