IBM's Cell Processor: An Analysis of its Synergistic Processing Unit - Prof. John Masiyows, Assignments of Computer Architecture and Organization

Information about ibm's cell processor, specifically focusing on its synergistic processing unit (spu). Students will learn about the presence and performance of integer and floating-point alus in the spu. This assignment is related to the computer organization and architecture course, and is based on the spring 2007 semester. Instructions for the assignment, background information, and questions to answer regarding the cell processor.

INFS515-1 Computer Organization and Architecture Spring 2007
Non-Textbook Assignment #3
Computer System Technology Investigation (Part 3)
Date of Homework Assigned: Refer course web page for posting date.
Date of Homework Due: Refer to homework schedule posted on the course web site.
Summary:
This project will continue your introduction to the area of computer architecture and organization
by reviewing past and/or current developments including trends as well as the latest
developments in the computer system area.
Background:
There are large variety of microprocessors that are used as the core component of a computer
based system. Modern microprocessors today have the ability to have multiple ALUs (both
integer and floating-point capable). Computer Systems (really Information Systems especially
gaming devices) usually perform a large quantity of numerical computations. The Cell
Processor from IBM/Sony/Toshiba that is used in Sony's latest generation gaming unit, the
Playstation 3 is a highly advanced micro computing device.
Description:
Answer the following questions regarding IBM's Cell Processor, Synergistic Processor Unit
(SPU):
1. Does the SPU have an integer-based ALU?
2. What is the performance in terms of operations per second of this integer-based ALU?
3. Does the SPU have a floating-point based ALU?
4. What is the performance in terms of operations per second of the floating-point ALU?
Check IBM's Cell Processor web site as a starting point at the following URL:
http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/products/Cell_Broadband_Engine
The summary should be no more than two (2) typed single-sided, 8.5” x 11” size pages (1.5 line
spacing, 12 point, courier font) excluding references and bibliography. Include references and
web URLs along with your submission.
Use of the Internet for this assignment is permitted and encouraged. NOTE: Honor code and
proper citations for references and quotations applies.
Keep all of the material that you collect for this assignment. This material may be used as a
basis for future assignments.
NOTE: This exercise supplement the topics covered in Chapter 3 of the course textbook.
